Words and Phrases

Hold true: Staying relevant, remaining valid, having the same meaning even after time has passed, to continue to be true.

Transform: A dramatic change, a major shift. For example, the pandemic has transformed the way we do business.

Astounding: Shocking. This is a very strong word. For example, it's astounding how much we've come to use smartphones in the past decade.

Specific: In this case, "specific" means "unique." Ms. Gratton said, "It's very specific to the Japanese culture."

Enormous: Huge, as in "The pandemic has been an enormous accelerator of the thing we always wanted."

Accelerator: To make something go much faster or give it energy. In a car, we have brakes and the accelerator. The accelerator makes the car go faster. Gas is an accelerator for fire. It gives the fire more energy.

Experiment: As in, "We've been experimenting with new technology."

Sea change: A dramatic change or shift, particularly with a large group of people, sometimes called a paradigm shift.

The first thing to do is to talk to your boss. If that doesn't work, revisit your lifestyle. Changing jobs may be an option. It's you who has to take an initiative in a multi-stage life.

See you next time. Bye!
