So, what is the nuance of “I suppose” in this sentence?

Well, the feeling is that you know the person’s not so sure.

そうですね。感じとしては、そうですね。この人物は確信がない

And maybe there’s also a hint of… -Not caring- … not caring so much.

Suppose she left you, what would you do? 彼女が君を捨てたとしたらどうする?

仮定法

So, in this sentence, subjunctive mood is used, right?

この文では仮定法が使われていますよね?

So, what kind of nuance is carried through this subjunctive?

どんな類いのnuanceがこの仮定法を通して伝えられているのでしょうか?

Well, the subjunctive indicates that there’s a very low possibility, you know, suppose she left you, but I’m not saying she will, I’m saying probably she won’t in fact. But just, just suppose.

そうですね。仮定法が指し示しているのは、とても低い可能性ですね。彼女が捨てたとしたら、というのは、彼女がそうすると言っているのではなく、実際には恐らくはそんなことはないと言っているのですけど、もし、もしそうしたら という…

Well, for me, the basic image of “miss” is something that’s not complete.

そうですね。私にはmissの基本的imageは、完全でないもの です

In this case, it’s my family. I’m separate from my family. So, I don’t feel complete. Therefore I miss them. この場合。家族のことです。家族と離れているので完全な気持ちがしない。それゆえ私は家族をmissしているのです

Yeah, my feeling is similar as well. So, my image of “miss your family” is like, I have a hole in my heart. So, I’m missing my family. I have a hole in my heart. I’m so lonely. So that’s my feel of it. そうですね。私の気持ちも似ています。私のmiss your familyときいて思い浮かべることは、心の中に穴が空いている感じですね。だから、家族をmissしている。心の中に穴が空いているので、とても寂しい。なので、それが私のmissについての気持ちですね

That’s right. And here the “up” in tied up has the image of completely. So it’s the same thing with “clean up” or “finish up.”

Well, a thinker is someone who thinks deeply. So, for example, a philosopher would be considered a thinker. そうですね。*thinkerは深く考える人 ですから、例えば、哲学者がthinkerと考えられるでしょうね →頭にfocusされている

So, how about “believer” ? それではbelieverはどうでしょう?

Well, a believer. The first association would be someone who’s into religion.
