ちょっと怖い話をひとつ

V先生(ALT)が私の話している英語にケチをつけてきた。

*word excel に入れたファイルの場所がわからなくなった場合 全ファイル検索を実行する! 人間の手で何日もかかることが数分以内に解決!

 

どのようなめんどくさい業務もその業務が終了するまでは予定表に記入しておく その業務が終了した時点で----線を引いて完全に終了してしまえば、その業務に関して思い煩う必要がなくなる

 

処理漏れのものは[]と書き、終了したら[スミ]としておけば、二度とその業務のことを考える必要はない。もし、ほんの一瞬でも考えたとしたら、それは完全なる時間の無駄遣いとなる。

情報を消す際には必ず----線を引くことにする。そうすると、万が一、あの日何をしたのか-ということを思い出す必要に迫られた場合でも、すぐに確認できる

 

同僚に仕事のできない人がいたとしても、ヒトとしてリスペクトする努力を怠らないことがよい、と私は思う

 

難しい仕事…実はそうでないことが多い。複雑に見えることでも、単純な形にばらして、ひとつひとつ確実に処理していけば終わりが見えてくる そして結局は簡単な仕事になる

 

やらなくてもいいことは一生やる必要なし

 

仕事のできない人でもリーダーになれる 自分より仕事のできる人に委譲すればいい

 

世の中よい人ばかりでなく、敵と思われる人もいることは事実。しかし、これは恐ろしいことだが、最大の敵が自分の中に潜んでいることもある

 

言葉のみで他者を死に追いやることは、割と簡単なことなのだが、何よりも恐ろしいのは、最終決定を下すのは他者でなく他ならぬ死を選んだ本人の「脳」であること…最大の敵が何と自分の中にいたりもする

Sugita: In the current vignette, the A&A staff talk about working remotely. Heather, have you done remote work since the pandemic started?

 

H: Yes. Ive worked at home one to three days a week. Its been a good experience overall, especially because its not every day. I like the balance of interacting directly with my coworkers on some days and being more alone on others. And productivity hasnt been a problem if anything, I think I work even harder at home because I dont want anyone to think Im slacking off! One day my manager sent me an email saying, You know, you can take a coffee break once in a while. Getting a break from my usual commute is also nice. That's two extra hours to get things done around the house or play with my daughter.

 

S: Have there been any downside?

 

H: A big danger for me has been eating too much. Getting a snack is more involved in the office. I have to go two floors down to the convenience store. So it's easier to avoid. At the house, however, my workstation is about 10 steps from the kitchen. So I have to exert a lot more willpower to stay away. Also I get much less exercise on remote work days. There's no walk to and from the stations, for example.

 

S: And you have your daughter at home sometimes.

 

H: Yes. It can be hard for her when I'm working on a day that she doesn't have school. I think she's been really patient for a second-grader. But when it gets near the end of my workday, she starts asking, "Mommy, are you done yet?" every 10 or 15 minutes. Whats been your experience, Mr. Sugita?

 

S: I was in self-isolation early in the summer. So, I decided to take out the bicycle I bought three years ago but had hardly ever used. Cycling early in the morning turned out to be fun as I explored my neighborhood and even pedaled to a couple of the suburban communities where I used to live some 30 to 40 years ago. I was amazed to find a lot of historical relics, gardens and parks, some of them dating back to the Edo period. There were also good old sento, public bathhouses that had refused to disappear. I counted five of them in my neighborhood, one of which has since closed, and I took a dip in all of them.

 

H: That sounds wonderful.

 

S: My bicycle tours usually ended up in a large park a stones throw from my home. The board at the entrance to the park said the area was known as the forbidden mountain in the Edo period, because it was used as a hunting ground by the shogunate. If it wasnt for the novel coronavirus, I would never have discovered those interesting spots, even though Ive lived in the area for over 10 years now. That was one bright side to working from home.

McMillan says he established a morning routine for remote work very similar to his regular one.

And Salmans comments that its very easy to gain weight staying at home all day.

Ueda says it was a big change to work at home as hes an outgoing person and describes the steps he took to cope with depression or anxiety.

These included contacting friends and eating healthfully.

 

 

Let things slide: Salmans says, "Yes, you shouldnt let things slide when youre working in self-isolation." Salmans means "stop taking proper care of one's  appearance, health, work responsibilities, various things." Such as, I've really let things slide around the house. I'm going to tidy up this weekend. We also say, "let it slide" to mean "let someone get away with something," "not call them on it." Imagine a coworker's rude to me. But I know they're under a lot of stress. So, I let it slide. I don't say anything to them. Or, I don't complain to a supervisor.

 

Make a point of:

 

Follow an exercise program: Adhere to an exercise program, do what that program dictates. Likewise, we say, "It's important to follow the instructions carefully when setting up this software." Or, I followed the recipe exactly. But the cake didn't come out right.

 

Be cooped up at home:

 

Put on a few extra pounds: Salmans could also say, "put on a few." Just stop there. I know how easy it is to put on a few when you're sitting around at home all day. Likewise, we put on weight. You might say, "I don't want to put on weight. So, I cut back on my carbohydrates."

 

Sit around at home: To be at home not particularly doing anything. It's also common to say "stand around," which also indicates inaction. Like, he isn't trying to find a job. He's just sitting around waiting for an offer to come. Or, our boss doesn't stand around in a crisis. He pitches in and helps.

 

Keep an eye on: Watch something, monitor something. Make sure that something be vigilant to see that something happens or doesn't happen. For example, I've kept an eye on our expenditures and we're still under budget. Or, "Keep an eye on that oven. Make sure the cookies don't burn."

 

Gregarious: Outgoing, sociable. His gregarious nature makes him a good salesman. Or, we put our most gregarious staff at the reception desk.

 

Gregarious Americans      Guilty! Guilty as charged!

 

Meditate: Ueda says, "I would mediate every morning,"

Sit back: Ueda means "relax back in his chair or other seat." Like, I sat back on a sofa and watched the movie. "Sit back" can also mean "not take action." Ah, let something happen without participating or interfering. Like, Patricia didn't try to help solve the problem. She just sat back and watched everybody else do it.

 

I sat back on the sofa and watched a movie.

 

Sit back and relax 座ってくつろぐ / Sit back and think じっくり考える

 

Figure out why: Determine the reason for something, the cause of something. Things like, the computer keeps crashing. I hope the systems staff can figure out why. Or, we're trying to figure out why that product failed.

 

Stick to a healthy diet: Adhere to a healthy diet, eat healthy foods. You could also say, "He sticks to a rigid schedule every day. He always does things at exactly the same time." Or, I just can't stick to an exercise program. I get bored too easily.

Salmans says some people felt their productivity improve during remote work.

And McMillan comments that he likes the feeling of fellowship he gets in the office.

Grace relates the advice that a friend gave her, Less is better when doing remote work.

She says her friend recommended fewer gadgets and apps and keeping ones home office simple.

 

 

Commute: McMillan means the trip to work each day. Ah, here, "commute" is a verb. It's also a noun. I have a long commute over an hour by train one-way. And there's also "commuter." This can be people who commute. Like, there are fewer commuters on the trains these days. Or, an adjective, ah, related to things connected with commuting. The commuter trains are emptier than they used to be.

 

Telework telecommute telecommuter 在宅勤務 遠隔勤務

Tele 遠い 遠距離

 

Be much better used: Or, be much better spent. That would work too. We use these expressions about time and money a lot. It would be much better. It would be more effective to do this. Such as, our money would be much better spent updating our computer system. Or, his time would be much better spent reading than playing video games.

 

The money is better spent on

 

Camaraderie:

 

Face less traffic: Ueda says, "people who still have to commute will face less traffic and stand a better chance of getting a seat on the train or bus." If we're facing something, we encounter it, we have to deal with it. Things like, I'm facing a busy schedule this week. Or, new graduates are facing a highly competivie job market.

 

Stand a better chance of:

 

Less is better.
Grace says, "The most useful one was quite simple: less is better."  Or, less is more. That's okay too. They both mean something simpler,  something less complicated is better in some way. It's more efficient or it's more attractive, effective. You could say, "Less is better when it comes to accessories. When in doubt, take something off." Or, "Less is more when it comes to a presentation. Keep it concise and to the point."

 

Gadget:

 

Work app: An app designed and used for work purposes. We also have expressions like "work station" and "work space," areas at an office and at a home where someone works. Work clothes are clothes that we wear for work that are appropriate for doing our job. For example, I always take off my work clothes before eating dinner. I don't wanna get any stains on them.

 

Well-designed:

 

Noise-cancelling headphones: Headphones that block out noise around a person. We also have the phrasal verb "cancel out." If A cancels out B, then it reduces the effect or balances something out. Like, our savings in this area cancel out the extra expenditures over here.

 

 

Rambunctious:

She has a laptop, a well-designed, comfortable office chair and noise-canceling headphones to avoid being disturbed by her rambunctious kids.

Another way to say boisterous and unruly is rambunctious. For example, That breed of dog is quite rambunctious and not suited for apartment life.

 

Stay in one's pajamas: Not change out of one's pajamas into other clothes, you know, keep wearing them. He stayed in his pajamas all day Saturday.

Or, she stayed in her swim suit all day on vacation.

 

Scold someone for being a slob: A slob is lazy or messy. They don't care of their appearance or their environment. Like, he's such a slob. His desk is covered with food wrappers and drink cans. And to scold someone is to admonish them, reprove them for a bad action. It's especially common to use this about people who are ranked lower in some way or toward children. Like, he scolded his daughter for not doing her schoolwork. Or, his boss scolded him for wearing a stained shirt. But if I said, "I scolded my boss," people around me would be like, "You did what?"

Working From Home (3)

 

McMillan praises A&A for asking people at the beginning of video conference meetings how they were adjusting to remote work.

Grace says people compare their experiences with things like juggling childcare and work responsibilities.

Ueda says some of his colleagues experienced bad cabin fever.

And Salmans adds that people thought seriously about balancing life and work.

 

 

Make an unwelcome appearance: Something or someone appears that we don't want to see. Like, a big pimple made an unwelcome appearance on my chin right before the meeting. Or, rain made an unwelcome appearance at the picnic.

Videoconference staff meeting: McMillan says, "people were asked at the beginning of videoconference staff meetings how they were coping with their new remote-work routine." A staff meeting is generally attended by all the staff of a company or division and they're usually held regularly to talk about various issues involved in running the company or running that division. You might say, "We have a staff meeting every Monday morning." Or "We have a staff meeting twice a month."

Cope with: Deal with certain problems and difficulties, handle them, overcome them. There were so many headlines this year, like how to cope with stress from the pandemic or how to help children cope with the pandemic.

 

Remote-work routine: A routine is a pattern of behavior in some situation, the actions we regularly engage in. So, here, the pattern of behavior when doing remote-work. Likewise, people have a skin care routine or a self-care routine. Like, my selfcare routine involves having a cup of herb tea and listening to soothing music at night.

 

Tele-work / tele-commute  

最近はremote-work という言葉を目にすることの方がやや多くなってきたような感じがします

 

Have an informal chat about: Have a casual, relaxed conversation about something. You can also say, chat informally or just chat. "Chat" itself refers to an informal, relaxed talk. Like, we chatted about our kids over lunch. Or, we had a nice chat about movies we've seen lately.

 

Chitchat 雑談

 

Compare notes on: This doesn't mean actual written notes but information, opinions. People shared their opinions, their experiences with the difficulties of working remotely. We also say "exchange notes." Like, let's exchange notes after we make our proposal, talk about the boss's reaction.

 

Schoolwork: Assignments from school. "Homework" would be another way to say this. Do your schoolwork then you can watch TV. Or, you can't go to your friend's house until you've done your homework. There's also "housework," various tasks around the house. My daughter helps with the housework. She takes out the trash. 

 

Share a tip about: Share pointers, advice about something. We shared tips on how to write a good report, for example. Or, to use a variation, do you have any tips on how to ask for a raise?

 

Go stir-crazy:

 

Severe case of: Ueda says, "some of my colleagues developed pretty severe cases of cabin fever." A severe case can refer to an actual illness. Like, he developed a severe case of the flu. Or, to use the opposite expression, she had a mild case of chicken pox. Ueda is using it metaphorically. Like, he had a severe case of nerves. It was his first time to give a speech. Or, I have a severe case of jealousy. I wish I had gotten a promotion.

Working From Home (2)

 

Grace talks about the difficulty of dealing with technical problems during remote work.

And Ueda adds that managers worry about employees not being as efficient.

Salmans describes what he does when his productivity flags.

And Grace recommends having a fixed routine when working at home.

McMillan says he has an area where he can work without being disturbed.

 

 

Right at hand:

 

On one's own: By oneself, without assistance from others. My daughter tells me all the time these days, "I can do it on my own." "Okay, okay." Or, Louise called in sick today. So I gave the presentation on my own.

 

Live on one's own 一人暮らしをする

On one's own time 暇な時に 勤務時間外に


 

To a certain degree: To a certain extent, somewhat. You might say, "Our work schedules are flexible to a certain degree." Or, this drug is effective to a certain degree.

 

Run into a tech problem: Experience a technical problem, something to do with technology. And people who handle these things are often called "tech staff" or "system's staff." Something like, "Wohhh! My computer just went crazy. I'd better call the tech staff."

 

Face-to-face interaction: Ueda says, "Yes, the lack of face-to-face interaction presents some very real challenges." Now, in this case, he means "in person," you know, you're physically in the same room with someone. But I think with things like video calls and such, you might also say, "face-to-face interaction." Imagine I do a video conference with someone, I might say, "Hi! It's nice to meet you face to face for the first time." Or, if he's upset, he should tell me fact to face.

Meet face to face = meet in person 直接会う

 

Feel frustrated: We feel frustrated when we can't accomplish what we want to do or get what we want. We're thwarted in some way. The adjective is "frustrating." Like, I'm very frustrated by his indecision. He keeps changing his mind. Or, this is so frustrating. My calculator app keeps crashing.

he inability to decide on a course of action, especially if two or more possibilities exist. Billy Toad has shown extreme indecision in all aspects when it comes to his jeep. Whether it's how to modify it, or if he will sell it.

 

Flag: "Flag" as a verb can have a number of meanings. Ah, here, it's "lose energy, become weak." Like, my energy often flags around 3 or 4 in the afternoon. It can also mean "signal," especially "flag down," which means "signal to stop." He flagged down a policeman and asked for help. There's also "mark" or "identify." For example, this restaurant has been flagged for unsanitary conditions.

 

Flag down a taxi タクシーなんかを手を挙げて呼ぶ

Flag noun 危険信号 red flag 赤旗

 

Mundane:

 

Inbox: 電子メールの受信箱 Salmans means the folder containing emails we've received. Now, back in the day, this could also be a tray or file box on someone's desk where they would put things they needed to read or respond to. Perhaps that's becoming a thing of the past. I don't know. Or, it could also just be a metaphorical bunch of things we need to do. Like, yes, I will check that translation for you today. I've got it in my inbox.

 

Fixed routine: Grace says, "Its good to have a fixed routine when youre working from home." A set routine, a routine that is basically the same all the time. Likewise, my daughter takes a fixed route to school each mornig. She always walks along the same street.

We use this construction with a lot of words to emphasize how pleasant something is or that it's in a desirable condition. Like, make sure your seat belt is nice and tight. Or, I like working in this café. It's nice and quiet.

The basic image of “raise” for me is something which moves from a low level, even zero, to a higher level. That’s why we have a salary raise, for example. Or, we raise the flag. Anything which moves from a low position to a higher position.

Grace invites the A&A staff to review their experience of working remotely amid the pandemic.

And Ueda says theyve been shown the work life of the future.

Salmans cites a statistic about how many Americans were already working from home and says for most people it was the first time they were working outside the office separately from their colleagues.

 

 

Pandemic:

 

Opt to: Choose the option of. Carl opted to extend his contract, for example. Or, he opted to stay in his current department. We put a verb after "opt to."

After "opt for," it would be a noun. Like, she opted for a bigger apartment with a longer commute.

*opt for + noun 

opt in favor of 

opt out ~しないことを選択する

 

Work remotely:

 

Serve as: Perform this function, be of use in this way. Let's say, "I make a big mistake at work." Later I say, "This will serve as a reminder to me: always double check." "Serve as a warning" is also common. Let this serve as a warning to me. Or, just more straight function: The library serves as a polling place on Election Day.

 

Crash course in: Learning a lot about something in a short period of time. Imagine someone starts a completely new job, you know, they've never done this type of work before. They might say, "I'm getting a crash course in marketing on social media." And we can use this about actual lessons too. I'm taking a crash course in financial literacy.

 

Physically distant:

 

To put it mildly: Ueda says, "It wasnt the most enjoyable educational experience, to put it mildly." We use this when we understate things when we use softer or weaker expressions than the reality. Things like, that team's been having a bad year, to put it mildly. They're currently owe for seven. Or, he said our schedule is a little tight? That's putting it mildly. We have to finish in one week.

 

To put it simply 簡単に言えば

 

Be given a glimpse of:

 

Come out of: Result from something, proceed from something. A lot of great ideas came out of that meeting, for example. Or, an important discovery came out of that research.

*proceed from something  phrasal verb  formal/to happen or exist as a result of something

*ideas that proceed from a disturbed state of mind

 

Come out against ~に反対する意見を表明する 反対する態度を表明する

 

Respond to: Take action in response to something, in answer to something. Things like, the automaker responded to the accidents by recalling its vehicles.   Or, to use a variation, the automaker recalled its vehicles in response to the accidents.

 

One way or another: In some form, ah, in one of a variety of ways. Salmans could also have said, "working from home in or one way or another." This can also mean "somehow, no matter how." Like, one way or another we've got to get to the airport by 3.

Self-isolate:

 

Wave of the future: McMillan says, "wed been hearing for some time that working from home was the wave of the future." Something that will be increasingly common or popular in the future. I saw an article recently that asked "Are virtual weddings the wave of the future?" Or, hydroponic farming is the wave of the future.

*Hydroponics is a way to skip the soil, sub in a different material to support the roots of the plant, and grow crops directly in nutrient-rich water.

So, the speaker is using the verb “approve” because it’s a serious situation, isn’t it?

That’s right. “Approve” is kind of an official sounding verb, isn’t it? So, even talking to your parents, you would not normally use it. But, in this case, because you think it’s serious, “approve” is fine.

You also commonly use it when it comes to getting married. My parents don’t approve.


 

Excuse me. May I use the bathroom? すみません。トイレを使ってもよろしいでしょうか?

So, “Can I” is also possible here, right?

It is possible, of course, but “May I” is a bit more formal and classy, I think.

This always reminds me of the story when I was a primary school kid: When I asked the teacher, “Can I use the bathroom?” And he said, “You can, but you may not.” Luckily, those days are finished.

英語勉強法に「音読」がよくあげられます。

 

ボクは「暗唱」してから「音読」するのがいいと思います。

 

そしてそれを繰り返す。過剰学習ですね。「音読」はすごく根気がいりますし、飽きてくるので、たまには自分の手を使って「書く」。20回「音読」したら、1回「書く」…みたいな。

 

できたら無意識下に入って行くまで。つまり、考えなくても英語が口から出てくるまで。

 

そして、それを実際に「使う」。

 

「使わない」と本当には身につかないように思います。

 

その点、ボクのところはnative English speakers  がしょっちゅう来てくれるので理想的な環境のように思っています。

 

もちろん、勉強法にはいろいろあって、品詞に分けて、あくまでも分析的に勉強していく方法もあるのでしょうけど…。

そうするとですね、やはり、「時間がかかります」それも相当に。

英語の先生はそういう品詞分けとかの分析的アプローチを知っておく必要はあるのでしょうが、それを授業してしまうと、先生の自己満足に終わり、肝心の生徒さんには届かないことが多いような気もします。

やはり、実際にnative English speakersとの会話のやりとり、あるいはメールのやりとりなどをすることを通して、英語感覚は少しずつ身についていくのではないか、と考えています。



英検1級を例にみてみます。

 

冒頭の語句の問題なのですが、ボクは学生さんたちには次のように勧めています。(実はこの冒頭の語句問題が難しいです)

まず、

を何度も読んで暗唱します。

それから、問題を解きます。

The company has been surreptitiously keeping two sets of accounts. 内密に裏口座を利用し続けた。

を暗唱していたら、簡単に解けますね。

そして次には、

The company was discovered to have been surreptitiously keeping two sets of accounts for years in an attempt to evade taxes. (脱税を試みて、何年もの間、その会社が内密に裏口座を利用し続けていたことが明るみに出た)

自体を、何度も読んで暗唱します。

こうすると、個々の単語のみならず、フレーズ、英語構文のすべてを身につけることができます。

これが1回分で25問  37回分だと…何と925問!

1問に単語が20個あると仮定して、925問だと、20000語近い語句が頭に入ります。(何度も音読して暗唱して、さらに音読してを繰り返してですが…)

 

 

ここで大事なこと…surreptitiously 以外の obviously / ascetically / exponentially はこの際、無視します。

どうしても気になるようなら、辞書(onlineのも含む)で調べて必ず例文を記録して、(単語のみならず)例文ごと覚えます。そもそも単語だけ覚えてもあまり役に立たないばかりか、ほとんど忘れます。

これもやってみればわかりますが、とても時間がかかります。そもそも普通の辞書では(英検1級で出題される)単語を調べても例文がないことがしばしばです。もちろんonline辞書だと例文などいくらでも出てきますが… ですから、当面は無視したらよいです。

Sugita: In the current vignette, the A&A staff talk about midlife crises. Heather, I would never reveal a lady's age. But are you experiencing anything like this?

 

H: That's all right. I will be 50 in January 2021. I have nothing to hide. But I had to laugh reading this vignette because once again, a lot of it mirrors my own life. Lidia Grace said that when she turned 50, she rethought her diet, right. Well, I did that at the age of 49, 'bout 6 months ago. I got a real wake-up call from my bathroom scale and I decided I'd better turn things around NOW before I close to the other side of 50.  So, I drastically cut back on my snacking and started paying a lot more attention to the nutrition and the calories in what I do eat. I'm feeling and looking much better and this time I'm going to make it stick. I took two pair of jeans that don't fit me anymore and threw them in the trash.

 

S: The vignette also mentions the importance of physical exercise. Are you doing anything in that regard?

 

H: Not yet but I need to. I certainly have noticed my weakening muscles. I'm especially worried about my upper body. I should look into doing some swimming or perhaps lifting weights.

 

 

 

S: Have you made up a bucket list?

 

H: Ah, no. Ive had ideas over the years. Ive mentioned this or that thing that Id like to do, but Ive never sat down and written an actual list of things to accomplish. And I probably should. We can get so caught up in the details of daily life, its easy to look around one day and realize that 10 years or 20 years have gone by and we barely even noticed it. OK, Ill make that my next project, along with exercising. Write out a list of at least 10 things to accomplish. Whats been your experience with midlife crises, Mr. Sugita?

 

S: To quote Ann Landers, a well-known U. S. advice columnist: Mid-life crisis . . . does not

happen to every man. And it does not always happen in the fifties. Sometimes it occurs in the forties or the sixties. But when the Im slipping feeling takes over, some men try to compensate by switching to trendy clothes, tinting their hair to hide the gray or they suddenly become physical culture buffs. Some mid-life crisis males decide they need a new (and younger) wife. Fortunately, I didnt switch to trendy clothes or to a new and younger wife.

 

H: Im very glad to hear that. The wife part, I mean.

 

S: There may be many different reasons for a midlife crisis but I can understand how some people would do those things. Also, a midlife crisis is a normal part of the maturing process for some people.

 

H: I agree. Nobody likes getting older, but it happens to everybody. Perhaps we can view a midlife crisis as a considerate reminder from biology.

 

 

A nudge telling us, "Hey, none of us are going to be here forever. So, stop for a second. Look around. Think about what you want to do and where you wanna go from here." In fact, maybe we should rename it accordingly. It's not a midlife crisis. It's a midlife reminder.

本来なら5回は繰り返したいところですが、3回は繰り返せます。

聞くだけで、1回分30分かかります。そして復習。これで1時間。

音読・暗唱をすると早くて1時間。つまり2時間はかかります。

つまり、2時間×33日=66時間 あれば一応の対策ができます。

 

というのは、机上の計算ですね。

実際にはどうでしょうか? クリスマスもあり、大晦日、お正月と…行事続き
お仕事のある方はもちろん、学生の方だって他の教科もあります。
専業主婦(夫)の方の仕事はとてつもなく多いですね。

2時間の勉強時間…実行できる人は恐らく1割くらい。

 

何と、これは英検準1級の合格率に近いですね。

 

数字は嘘をつきません。

 

音読・暗唱は非常にきついですね。飽きてしまってやりたくなくなることも。

そこで、ディクテーションが非常に役立ちます。

最初の頃はきついかもしれませんが、何度もディクテーションしてスクリプトで答え合わせすることで、少しずつできるようになります。

もちろん、2時間ではすまないでしょう。(実際にやってみればわかります。かなりめんどくさいです。(^^) 3時間~5時間はかかるかも。

 

そうすると、11回分を復習することでかなりの準備ができることになります。

でも、その時間を捻出するには、やはり3か月は必要な気がします。

And Grace describes her own fitness program.

She says the best way to lose weight is to eat fewer calories especially saturated fats.

Ueda says his father is a strong advocate of getting enough sleep and rest. And Nissen adds that Middle-aged people should not stay up using their smartphone or computer.

 

 

Physical frailty: Physical weakness, ah, physical health that is easily harmed. Elderly people are especially often describe this frail. Ah, for example, her grandmother has been frail ever since she hurt her hip.

Associate A with B: Connect, relate in a mind. Or, connect causally. See a cause and effect relationship. Italy is often associated with great food and beautiful scenery. Or, this illness is generally associated with insufficient vitamin C.

 

Inactivity: Not engage in activity, being inactive. The adjective is "inactive," which we use about things as well as people. If something is not being used or operated, we often say it's inactive. Like, that bank automatically closes inactive accounts after 10 years. Or, we're moving all this inactive equipment to the warehouse.

Brisk: Grace says, "My personal fitness program includes aerobic exercise like a brisk walk every day." Brisk, ah, the image is "fast and sharp." Like, we often say, "There's a brisk wind today." So there's a strong sharp wind coming at us.

 

Put on weight: Gain weight, get heavier. And this isn't necessary unhealthy. Like, it's normal for pregnant women to gain weight. Or, the babies put on lots of weight in the last 6 months.

 

Play a role: Be a factor, influence a situation. You could say, "Timing played a role in this product's success. It was very popular among holiday shoppers." Or, over expansion played a big role in the company's demise. They opened too many shops too fast.

 

Shed body fat: Get rid of, like a snake shedding its skin. The company will shed underperforming products from its lineup, for example. Or, that company is looking to shed its semiconductor division. So, it's looking to shed it.

Saturated fat:

 

Advocate: I advocate free speech. 私は言論の自由を擁護する

Advocate noun  advoCAte verb

 

I couldn’t agree more.

Ueda talks about his father's support for getting enough sleep and rest. And Nissen says, "I couldn't agree more." I completely agree, in other words.

We also have the expression "couldn't care less," which means "we don't care at all." I couldn't care less whether he is angry, means "It doesn't bother me at all, or I'm unconcerned with that person's anger. And strangely, we also use "could care less" in exactly the same way, which sounds wrong but still people do say things like, I could care less whether he is angry.

 

I can't agree. 私はあなたに同意できません あなたとは意見を異にしています

 

This can be a softer way, a gentler way to tell someone that you don't share their opinion. Let's say, someone, you know, they advocate for this political position. And I'm… I reply, "I just can't agree with you there." That's a lot nicer sounding than "Well, I think you're wrong."

 

*couldn’t care less = could care less

We also have the expression "couldn't care less", which means "we don't care at all."

 She couldn’t care less about her career. は彼女は自分のキャリアにはまったく関心がないということです

And we also use "could care less" in exactly the same way.

Even though grammatically this sounds wrong, doesn't it?

But if I say, "I could care less what other people think.", then I mean "I don't care at all what other people think."

Ueda speculates that external factors are a large part of midlife crises, which Lyons says is a very perceptive observation.

Nissen says there is likely to be additional pressure from the competitive job market these days, which leads to various financial worries.

Grace recommends staying healthy and fit enough to have an active independent life.

 

 

External factor: This would be things like our job or family relationships, ah, the state of the economy and such. You know, the things that come from outside ourselves.

 

Perceptive observation: Lyons says, "That's a very perceptive observation, Shota."  Something or someone, ah, that's perceptive is insightful, observant, discerning. You could say, "She is very perceptive about market trends," for example. Or, he's very perceptive about people. He always hires good staff.

 

Come to terms with: Become able to accept something, a difficult or painful situation. Like, he struggled to come to terms with his son moving overseas, for example. He really misses him. And "come to terms" can also mean "reach an agreement." Like, Company X and Company Y finally came to terms on the joint venture.

 

Transition: Here "transition" is a noun. Like, she found the transition to her new department very difficult. Ah, it was all new people and she didn't like the work very much. And it can also be a verb. Like, transitioning to a new city can be difficult. We are not familiar with the different neighborhoods. We don't know as many people and so on.

 

Overwhelming: In this case, "overwhelming" means "feel like something is too much to handle." Like, the amount of work this week is just overwhelming. It can also mean, "overwhelming and be overwhelmed" can also mean "deeply affected by emotion or deeply affected mentally." Like, I was overwhelmed by her kindness.

 

I was underwhelmed by her kindness. That's a good one.

Co-sign: To jointly sign some document or endorse another person's signature. Like on a loan. Let's say, I have a friend who is in financial trouble to some extent.  So, I co-sign on their apartment lease to guarantee that the rent will be paid. And we use co-hyphen, you know, with so many words. Ah, they co-founded an IT company together. And we are co-writing a children's book.

 

Co-author 共著者

 

Bankruptcy risk factor: A factor, an element that puts someone at risk of bankruptcy that contributes to the risk of bankruptcy. We also talk about things like risk factors for diabetes or risk factors for dementia. Factors that can lead to developing those conditions.

 

Eat away at: Grace says, "That eats away at our savings and makes it harder to make ends meet."

 

Make ends meet: Manage so that we have enough money to cover our expenses or that our expenses come in within the amount of money we have.

There's a nuance it often implies that we have to make an effort, you know, that it's not easy to do this. And it's like we're, we're putting our expenditures and our money toward each other until they meet, until it balances out. So you could say, "In addition to his regular job, he does freelance translating to make ends meet." Or, to make ends meet, she only buys clothes on sale.

 

Inevitable consequence: Something inevitable is guaranteed to happen. There's no way to avoid it. Things like, it was inevitable that product would fail. They rushed to the development and the ad campaign was awful. Or, to use the adverb, inevitably that product failed.
