Hello everybody.

Hello and welcome to the show.
This is either Howard.
Let's take a look at conversation at work.

Office Perks (6)

Sugita: Our current vignette talks about the various office perks
that companies are using to attract top talent.
Two of the benefits appear quite progressive - helping employees pay for
costly IVF and other assisted-reproduction treatments,
and offering pet insurance to cover the soaring costs of vet care.
Now what kind of perks would entice you to join a company, Heather?

Heather: Let's see. Ah, full-service onsite spa, in-house movie theater.
Just kidding.
Ah, let's see. I would love an in-house gym.
Ah, forgive me if that too is in the realm of fantasy.
But wouldn't it be great if a company had a facility onsite where
employees could get in some time on a treadmill or lift weights?
Or maybe take an exercise class.
Even if it was just one room.
It would be like the in-house at my company which lets the employees
access medical services quickly and easily.
How does the office perk situation in the United States compare with
that in Japan?

S: In the U.S., benefits like stock ownership plans, gym memberships
and flexible scheduling, including remote work setups,
are probably more prevalent than inJapan.
Student loan assistance and education reimbursement are most
welcomed by employees, as student loan balances have reached
epidemic proportions.

H: Oh yes, I would have liked that.
I didn't have nearly as much debt when I graduated as many people
do now - only about $10,000 - but even so, it would have been nice
not to have to repay it.

S: Transportation allowances, on the other hand, are a standard benefit
with Japanese companies, but they don't seem that prevalent in America.
Japanese companies are ahead of U.S. companies when it comes to
parental leave benefits, but American companies are vying to
offer better packages, regardless of gender and beyond what's legally
required, to attract and retain top-level employees.

H: I'm glad to hear that U.S. companies are stepping up in that regard,
ah.
In the past, American friends of mine have been shocked and envious
to hear how long Japanese employees can take off from work
for childbirth and childrearing.
And with partial pay no less.
Ah, likewise, I wish longer hospital stays with the norm
for American mothers after they give birth.
I needed every bit of the rest and care I got after giving birth
at a Tokyo hospital.
And I was still exhausted and sore when I did go home after five days.
I couldn't imagine leaving the hospital after only one or two.

S: Now what other perks would you like to have?

H: Flexible scheduling and unlimited holidays would be
a pretty powerful draw.
Some people might think that unrestrained vacation time would
be subject to a lot of abuse.
But I doubt it.
Employees would realize that they can't go hog wild with
that sort of thing.
They can't disappear for a week or two every month, for example.
Not only would it get them a bad reputation.
They'd never get the work done.
But it would be great to know that you didn't have to worry about getting
time off for an emergency because you'd already used it up
on your summer vacation.
Or that you could take a small break if you found yourself really
worn out.
Maybe take a three-or-four-day trip once in a while
to recharge your batteries.
And for working parents, flexible scheduling would be a godsend.

go hog wild
To behave in an uncontrolled manner, often due to excitement.
The crowd had been cheering, but they really went hog wild once the lead singer
took the stage. Your students will go hog wild if you never discipline them.

That's all for today.

See you next time. Bye, bye.

Hello everybody.

Hello andwelcome to the show.
This is Heather Howard.
Let's take a look at conversation at work.

OfficePerks (5)

Grace says that people who use all their vacation time are more likely to
be promoted because they properly balance work and relaxation.
McMillan describes how many employees struggle to find time
for volunteer work.
So more companies are letting them do it during work hours.
Grace says many companies now offer fertility benefits.

HR(=HumanResources):

Get a promotion:

Head to the beach: "Head to0" means "travel toward,
go toward some area or purpose."
I might say, "I think I'll head to lunch." or
"Ah, better head to work now."
There's also the expression "head home."
Start going toward our home.
The trains will be stopping soon. We should be head home.

Recharge one's batteries:
Do something to regain our physical or mental energy.
I'd like to watch a funny movie to recharge my batteries.
And we also just say, "recharge."
An afternoon nap is a great way to recharge.

Give back to the community:
Repay the community that has supported our career or business,
you know, bought our products or services.
There's also a very common shorter expression just "give back."
And this can mean "repaying a specific benefit"
or "just making a contribution to society in general."
In the latter case, I think, there's a feeling of repaying a good fortune
because we can make a contribution,
saying society has overall been good to us so we're giving back.
Like, he donates money to a homeless shelter as a way to give back.

Dedicated: In this case, "dedicated" means
"designed for a particular use or function."
A company may use a dedicated server.
So it's a server only for that company.
"Dedicated" can also mean "committed to some purpose or goal."
Works very hard, ah, toward that purpose or goal.
Ah, a dedicated student, right, who studies very hard,
takes extra classes.
Ah, a dedicated employee. That kind of thing.

On company time: During work hours, during time
when we're supposed to be doing the company's work.
Ah, you could say, "He was downloading music on company time."
Or, union meetings can be held on company time.
We also say, "on someone's own time,"
meaning when they're not working.
Like, personal errands should be run on our own time.

Progressive: McMillan says, "progressive companies are turning to
bigger and better fertility-treatment benefits."

Turn to: Apply to for help.
Utilize to address a problem or address a need.
Say, you have a problem at work. You're not sure how to handle it.
You turn to your colleague you admire for advice.

Fertility(-treatment)benefit:

Lure:

Costly:

In vitro fertilization(IVF): "In vitro" is Latin for "in glass."
And it refers to something that happens outside the human body.
Someone might say, "Our son was conceived in vitro."
Or to use the abbreviation for "in vitro fertilization."
They used IVF to have their daughter.

Assisted-reproduction treatment: Here the "assisted" indicates
that help was needed to achieve reproduction.
Ah, a scientific word for having a baby.
The verb would be "reproduce."
It's often used about animals and such.
Like, pandas don't reproduce very often.
Unlike rabbits which reproduce like rabbits.

Same-sex couple: Couples where both people are the same gender.
Not men and women.
Likewise, there is now same-sex marriage and same-sex weddings.

That's all for today.

See you next time. Bye, bye.

Hello everybody.

Hello and welcome to the show.
This is Heather Howard.
Let's take a look at conversation at work.

Office Perks (4)

Salmans says pressure and stereotypes often prevent fathers
from taking advantage of programs aimed at supporting child-rearing.
Ueda describes another perk that is highly popular among job-seekers.
And Salmans says progressive companies are offering employees
all they want of a certain benefit.
In return, employees are expected to do a good job.

Child-raising responsibilities:

Eliminate gender distinctions:
In this case, "distinction" refers to "differences."
Things that distinguish that separate one thing from another.
The company makes no distinction between full-time
and part-time employees in terms of parental leave, you could say.
Or, to use a verb, it doesn't distinguish between them.

Be reluctant to:

Take advantage of: Here ah, "take advantage of" means
"use an opportunity or a resource."
There's no negative meaning.
But it can mean exploit something in an unethical way
or a mercenary way.
Like, he took advantage of his friends' kindness to borrow lots of money.
Or, she took advantage of his trusting nature and sold him fake stocks.

Take advantage of: Here "take advantage of" means
"use an opportunity, utilize a resource."
There's no negative ah, nuance here.
But "take advantage of" can also mean
"exploit something in an unethical or mercenary way."
Like, she took advantage of his kindness to borrow lots of money.

Lingering stereotype: If something lingers, it remains, it persists.
This data reveals lingering weakness in the economy, for example.
Or, I have a lingering pain in my ankle.
And the verb "linger" can also mean "slow to leave a place."
I lingered in the bookstore for a while.
Or, we lingered over coffee before heading to the departure gate.

Unspoken pressure: We often use "unspoken"
when something isn't put into words or isn't directly expressed.
But the atmosphere is clear.
The understanding is there.
Like, ah, there's an unspoken rule that nobody leaves before the boss.
Or, slight variation, there's an unwritten rule that no one leaves
before the boss.

Unspoken rule
Unwritten rule 不文律
Unwritten agreement

Flexible scheduling: Ueda says, "Another benefit that smart companies
offer their employees is flexible scheduling."
Scheduling that can be changed as the employee needs to.
Likewise, we often say, "we're flexible on something," meaning
"we can adjust as necessary, we can consider multiple options."
Like, oh, I'm flexible on scheduling.
Ah, I don't mind coming in early a few days.
Or, Country X is flexible on allowing more imports.

Incentive for job-seekers:
An incentive, ah, encourages someone to do something.
Like, an incentive program for buying eco-friendly appliances.
Ah, a job-seeker is obviously a person seeking a job, looking for a job.
There are a number of terms that use, ah, hyphen seeking as well.
Profit-seeking investors, heat-seeking missiles, and ah, publicity-seeking celebrities.

Function: Perform the task, ah, the things we need to do.
I personally cannot function before my first cup of coffee.

Forward-looking: Salmans says, "I hear that some forward-looking
companies offer unlimited paid time off."

Unlimited paid time off:
There are no limits on how much time people can take off with pay.
Ah, likewise, a restaurant could offer unlimited refills of drinks.
So, I can get my drink refilled as often as I want it.

Paid time off PTO

Keep track of:

Sick leave:

In return: In exchange, ah, as reciprocation for something.
Like, John worked my late-shift last Friday.
So, I'm doing his late-shift today in return.

Turn in: In this case, "turn in" means "produce something."
Ah, it can be tangible or intangible.
Betty turned in an excellent presentation.
Or, Betty turned in an excellent report.

Good work performance:

That's all for today.

See you next time. Bye, bye.

Hello everybody.

Hello and welcome to the show.
This is Heather Howard.
Let'stake a look at conversation at work.

Office Perks (3)

Grace says that an estimated 60% of U.S. companies offer
pet insurance as an employee perk and quotes statistic
showing how a great many Americans own pets.
She also describes a perk that A & A is considering offering its staff.
And McMillan recommends making the parental leave program
more accessible to mothers and fathers.

Regain one's peace of mind: Native speakers often make a mistake here.
They write piece P-I-E-C-E instead of peace P-E-A-C-E.
They might be confusing this with "give someone a piece of one's mind."
Which means to honestly express your thoughts about something
or someone.
And it's usually harsh and critical.
But here it should be P-E-A-C-E.
As in, regain our serenity, our calm, untroubled state of mind.
Like, I doublecheck everything for my peace of mind
so I won't worry about it later.

Give someone a piece of one's mind
Harsh and critical

Peace of mind: Native speakers often make a mistake here.
They write P-I-E-C-E, piece instead of peace, P-E-A-C-E.
Ah, they might be confusing this with
"give someone a piece of one's mind."
Which is basic like, "Ooh, I will tell you what I think about you."
Ah, but here, we're talking about peace, mental tranquility,
a person's calm, untroubled state of mind.
Like, I doublecheck everything for my peace of mind
so I won't worry about it later.

Give someone a piece of one's mind

Boost employee productivity:

Odds are: This comes from gambling and it means "something is likely,
it's probable."
Odds are the product will be launched next summer.
Or, odds are the client will decide by Friday.
Grace could also have said, "Chances are."
Chances are most A & A employees have at least one pet.

The odds are even.
Against all odds

Tuition aid program: In the middle, Ueda says,
"I also think A & A's tuition aid program is a great perk."

Cope with: Deal with problems and difficulties.
Handle them, overcome them.
Like, she coped very well with not getting the job.
She kept looking and sending out resumes.
Or, he couldn't cope with his overly critical boss so he quit.

Higher education:

Be in a position to: Be in circumstances that allow something, ah,
have the ability to do something.
You might say, I'm not in a position to buy a new car right now.
Or, we're finally in a position to open a second store.

Fortunate: Lucky, blessed in some way.
He was fortunate to have a good mentor early in his career.
Or, to use a slight variation, she was fortunate enough to learn French
as a small child.
And you can use "lucky" in both ways as well.
He was lucky to have a good mentor.
Lucky enough to have a good mentor, etc.

For the benefit of:

Interest-free loan: A loan that doesn't involve any interest payments.
"Free" is put after many different terms.
Ah, a caffeine-free drink.
Or, he lives with his parents rent-free.
Ah, likewise, you could say, the new ordinance will make our streets
smoke-free.
Or, there's no such thing as a risk-free investment.

Hyphen free
A smoke-free
Risk-free

Alcohol-free beer
Salmonella-free egg

Step-free entrance

Parental leave program: Down at the bottom, McMillan says,
"we already have a good parental leave program here at A & A,"

Gender-fluid: McMillan wishes the program was more adaptable
to different genders.
He's saying that you know, men should be able to take off time
or more time to be with their babies as well as women.
Gender is a more scientific term for sex.
Gender-neutral means it doesn't indicate a specific gender.
Ah, for example, in English "Alex" is a gender-neutral name.
It could refer to a boy or girl.

Bond with: To develop a close relationship with.
I bonded with one friend over our love of reading.
Ah, we're always talking about books together
and recommending new titles.

At least:
Grace says, "Odds are most A & A employees have at least one pet."
This often comes up, ah, this phrase in translations that I see.
If we say, "at least" we mean from this number or from this amount on.
So, if I say, he's been to at least 20 countries.
Then he's visited 20 or more. 20 is included in the possible number.

That's all for today.

See you next time. Bye, bye.

Hello everybody.

Hello and welcome to the show.
This is Heather Howard.
Let's take a look at conversation at work.

Office Perks (2)

Ueda describes the perk that he likes best.
And Grace advises him not to be too vocal about his enthusiasm
as it might offend their customers.
Ueda agrees but adds that such programs are commonly known.
The conversation then turns to pet insurance with Salmans saying that
veterinary care has become much more expensive.

Generous: Ueda says,
"I personally enjoy A & A's generous employee discounts."
Abundant, ample discounts.
Like, they offered him a generous severance package.
Or, this restaurant serves very generous portions.
So quite large portions.
There's often a nuance of more than usual or more than necessary.
They paid me a generous amount for this translation.

Be eligible for: If we're eligible for something, we're allowed by the rules
or the laws to get it or to do it.
We also say, "eligible to with verbs."
So things like, single people are not eligible for that tax break.
Or, people who buy solar panels are eligible for a subsidy.

Eligible bachelor

Yes. Sometimes like a very rich young man or a handsome young royal
will be described as the most eligible bachelor in Europe or in Spain
or whatever.

Necessities:

Detergent: Soap we use for cleaning things like laundry and dishes.
And sometimes we say "laundry soap, dish soap."
Ah, I might ask my husband,
"Can you pick up some laundry detergent on your way home?"
Or, do we need to buy dish soap?

In-house discount program:

Drawing card: This often means ah, person or a feature that draws
a large crowd that brings in a large audience.
And you can also say just "a draw."
Our profit sharing program is a big draw for job seekers.
Or, the fantastic view from that hotel is one of its biggest draws.

Shout it from the rooftops: To enthusiastically share information
with a lot of people.
Like we're standing on the top of roofs, ah, yelling it out to everyone.
We also say, "shout it from the housetops."
For example, she's so happy about her promotion she's been shouting
it from the rooftops.
Or, why didn't you tell us your book is being published?
You should shout it from the housetops.

Pay retail: Pay the regular retail price, ah, without a discount.
I used to work at a clothing store.
And we got 20% off? Or was is 30%?
Ah, but that was just for us.
Friends and family had to pay retail.
And sometimes people will say, "I can get it for you wholesale."
Meaning the price a business pays to get an item
before the retail markup.

Retail Wholesale
Buy wholesale and sell retail.

Appreciate:

Empty seat or vacancy: Ueda says, "Airlines and hotel chains are
well-known forgiving discounts, especially when there are empty seats
or vacancies."
A vacancy is an unoccupied available room or apartment.
Ah, American motels have signs outside saying "vacancy" or
"no vacancy."
And that lets people know whether they should get off the road or not.
If there's no vacancy, there's no point in pulling over.
Ah, and we also use vacancy about job openings.
There's a vacancy in my department.
You should send a resume.

I bet: I'm fairly sure of this.
"I'll bet" is also okay.
Ah, like, I bet she'll be late again.
Or, I'll bet this product becomes a top seller.

Buzz around:

It's worth noting that: This point is worthy of notice.
It deserves attention.
There were several proposals worth noting at the meeting.
Or, it's worth noting that we're getting more repeat customers.

That's all for today.

See you next time. Bye, bye.

Hello everybody.

Hello and welcome to the show.
This is Heather Howard.
Let's take a look at conversation at work.

Office Perks (1)

Grace asks the A & A staff for feedback regarding office perks.
She gives some examples including ping-pong tables
and says some can actually interfere with employees' work.
Grace goes on to describe the main purpose of office perks.
And Salmans says companies are competing to offer
the most attractive ones.

Office perks: perquisite

Employee focus group discussion: And here, with focus group
and there are many different types of focus groups, of course,
not just employees.
It's …because it focuses it, concentrates on a certain issue,
certain topic or product.

Feedback:

Fine-tune: Adjust something ah, delicately, in small amounts
so that it performs as well as it can or so that it's most effective.
You could say, "We need to fine-tune the language in his speech."
Or, we fine-tune our consulting services to each customer's needs.

Company-sponsored: Grace says, "They including everything
from ping-pong tables and company-sponsored birthday cakes
to employee stock ownership programs."
Here it's company-sponsored. So it's paid for by the company,
funded by the company.
Likewise, there are government-sponsored programs
to boost employment.
Or, the city-sponsored fair will be held from Friday through Sunday.

Distracting: Pulls our attention away from something else.
I'd say "distracting" refers to undesirable situations.
Like, it's very distracting when people are humming.
Or, to use the verb, there are too many pictures in this pamphlet.
They distract from a content.

Detrimental to productivity:

Reap the benefit:
"Reap" originally means to cut grain and such for harvesting.
Grace means gain something as a result of your own actions
or someone else's actions.
The company has reaped enormous rewards from its research
and development, for example.
And there's also the saying, "reap as you sow."
Ah, this means "Good things happen to us if we do good things
and bad things if we do bad things."
"Sow" S-O-W means "to plant seeds."
So what we plant, good or bad, is what we get.

You must reap what you have sown.

What motivates the workforce: Encourages, inspires a person
to do something.
You could say,
"Seeing Carl exercise so much motivated me to start jogging."
Or, his encouragement motivated her to start her own business.

Tight labor market:

Boost morale:
In the workplace, "morale" is how employees feel about a job.
How enthusiastic they are, how committed.
You could say,
"Our profit sharing program has really boosted employee morale."
Or, morale has been very low since the salary cuts.

Boost productivity

Esprit de corps:

Talent-hungry:

Out-perk each other: Outdo each other, do better or do more
in terms of perks for employees.
We put lots of words after "out."
Ah, some will have hyphens. Others won't.
I can't outrun him. He is too fast.
Or, older people outvoted younger ones in the election.

Outrun
Outvote
Outspeak

So to speak: In a manner of speaking.
Ah, one might say it this way.
It's often used with puns and metaphors, that kind of thing.
For example, sales of refrigerators are experiencing a series chill,
so to speak.
Or, sports article might say, "The racers are revved up, so to speaks
and ready for Friday's race."

Seller's market: Down at the bottom, Salmans says,
"it's a seller's market these days for people with the right talents."
There's more demand than supply in a seller's market resulting
in higher prices and better terms for sellers.
In this case, the sellers are the job seekers. They're selling their talents.
And they can demand better salaries and perks.
If I say, "It's a seller's market in the housing industry."
then more people want to buy houses than are available.
So the sellers can ask for high prices and such.

Buyer's market

That's all for today.

See you next time. Bye, bye.

Hello everybody.

Hello and welcome to the show.
This is Heather Howard.
Let's take a look at conversation at work.

Singles With Pets  (6)

Sugita: Our current vignette talks about the large increase in
pet ownership among single people in the United States.
Now, you're not single, Heather, but do you have any pets?
You didn't have one the last time we discuss this, ah, back in 2013.
I think it was?

Heather: No. Still no pets.
Ah, we just don't have the time to take care of one right now.
And even if we did, our apartment building doesn't allow it.
Actually, preparing for this vignette reminded me of
how long it's been since I've had any kind of pet at all.
If memory serves, I've had a couple dogs, some rabbits,
one hamster and two cats.
My last pet of all was the cat that my boyfriend and I had in college,
26 years ago now.
Ah, his name was Trouble - the cat, not my boyfriend.
What about you, Mr. Sugita?
Do you have a dog or cat at the moment?

S: No, it's been a while for me too.
When I was a little boy, one of my Tanabata wishes for the Star Festival
was to get a dog.
So my family got me a newborn puppy, a mixed breed,
who ultimately lived to the ripe old age of 16.
In those days, most dogs in Japan were watchdogs who were fed
table scraps and lived in outside dog houses.
I haven't kept a pet since because my daughter had allergies
to animal hair, among other things.
The role that pets play in human society has changed a great deal now.
In the old days, pets were just something that people showed
affection to.
Now they're considered "companion animals" that live together
with humans.

H: The vignette mentions some people spending about $1,200 a year
on their pets.
I'm not surprised.
I've read many magazine articles over the years about how to
save money, and nearly all of them said "if you want to limit your
spending, don't get a pet."
Ah, even without frills, it can be quite expensive,
especially if the pet needs medical treatment of some kind.

S: Nowadays there's pet insurance, cat cafes, pet crematories and
cemeteries, as well as pet spas and pet sitting and walking services.
Many people want to treat their pets less like animals
and more like their own kids.
When their pets pass away, some owners or pet parents in the U.S.
even opt for freeze-drying, embalming or mummification of them.

H: I don't know anyone that dedicated to their pet right now.
But I did back in middle school.
Ah, I guess there have always been some people who are nutso
over their pets.
Anyway, one summer break, I cat sat for a lady and her husband
who were going on vacation.
I still remember going into their apartment and hearing the woman say
to the cat, mind you, "Would you like to show Heather your toys?"
Not only that, I was instructed to alternate the cat's food.
She shouldn't get fish or beef cat food on two consecutive days,
for example, because the little darling might get bored with her fare.

S: And did you?

H: I did.
That was no effort involved in alternating the food.
And I figured if that's what the client wants, that's what I should do.
Besides, the way she talked to that cat like it was a person,
I couldn't shake the feeling that the cat would somehow find a way
to inform on me if I didn't.

S: If you did get a dog or cat today, what kind would you get?

H: More than a particular breed, actually.
I think I'll get a rescue animal.
There are so many pets whose owners have either abandoned them
or had to give them up.
And they really need good new homes.

That's all for today.

See you next time. Bye, bye.

Hello everybody.

Hello and welcome to the show.
This is Heather Howard.
Let's take a look at conversation at work.

Singles With Pets (5)

Salmans describes how office buildings and condos are working
to accommodate the needs of busy pet owners with amenities
like dog runs and in-house walking services.
Ueda recommends a certain item that will make Salmans feel
more secure leaving his dog at home alone.
And Grace says the strong economy is good news for the future of
the pet industry.

Morning ritual: Morning routine would work here as well.
These are the things we do every morning to start the day.
You could say, my morning ritual starts with a glass of water
and some stretches. Ah, then I read the paper over breakfast.
Or, my evening ritual includes a hot bath and a cup of herb tea.

Sunday morning ritual

Reinforce: Strengthen by adding some kind of support.
This could be actual tangible physical support.
Like, the pillars of the building have been reinforced
to withstand earthquakes.
Or, we'll reinforce our sales network through this merger.
We also have the noun "reinforcement," which often refers to
rewarding anaction so that a person will do it again.
Like, the company provides a bonus as positive reinforcement
if we exceed our salesquota.

Reinforced concrete

Revolvearound: Up at the top, Salmans refers to our busy modern
lifestyles which mainly revolve around work.
They center on work. Work is the focus of our activity, of our daily lives.
Parents' lives tend to revolve around their children.
You know, sometimes they need to schedule some meet time,
have a date night.
Or, you could say, this TV show revolves around a Tokyo hospital
and its staff.

Respond to: Sometimes this means answer a communication.
Like, he hasn't responded to my email yet.
Or, she didn't respond when I asked her a question.
But here we're reacting by doing what is needed or
what someone wants us to do.
The company responded to its customers' desire for luxury items
and released several premium new models.

Upscale:

Condo(=condominium):

In-house: "In-house" is often used about things that are internal
to a company or some other organization.
Companies have in-house lawyers, for example.
And in-house awards for their staff.

My company has an in-house clinic.
So we don't have to leave the building to see a doctor.

We just go to a certain floor and there it is.

Resident doctor

Reassuring: Make someone feel secure, confident,
ah less upset or doubtful.
Ah, the verb would be "reassure."
Like, I reassured Stacy that her presentation was great.
She did a really good job.
And the noun would be "reassurance."
Stacy could respond,
"Thanks so much. I… I really appreciate your reassurance."

It's reassuring to know…

Luxury item: We'd contrast this with ah, essentials, maybe or an essential.
Like, if we want to save money, we should pass on luxury items
and concentrate on the essentials.

The well-to-do: "Well-to-do" can be a noun or an adjective.
Ah, they both refer to affluent or rich people.
I think we need to be higher than middle class for this term to apply.
Ah, this implies, ah, pretty high level of comfort and money.
For example, this resort is very popular among the well-to-do.
Or, that financial advisor only handles well-to-do clients.

Badly-off

Look into: Ueda recommends getting a pet cam.
Another way to say pet camera is a pet cam.
And Salmans replies, "Thanks, Shota, I'll look into that."

Petindustry revenue:

Economic downturn:

Great Recession:

Look to the future with optimism:
Have an optimistic outlook on the future.
Expect that good things will happen in the future.
In contrast, we could also say, "look to the future with pessimism."
Sadly many members of the magazine industry are look to the future
with pessimism.
Many magazines have closed.
And surviving ones, well they're seeing falling readership.

That's all for today.

See you next time. Bye, bye.

Hi! I’m Maxell Powers.

Stream
Tears streamed from her eyes.

Splash
The car splashed water on me.

Wah! Hey! You splashed water on me.
I’m really sorry.
Are you okay?
Ah, I’m okay, but...
Ah, you are Max.
Minami, I’ve been looking for you.
Max.

The water overflowed.
My heart is overflowing with love for you.

Flush

Hello everybody.

Hello and welcome to the show.
This is Heather Howard.
Let's take a look at conversation at work.

Singles With Pets (4)

Ueda says pet owners can spend up to 1200 dollars on their pets
each year including kennel fees and toys.
Grace describes how pets love their human companions without limits
or criticism.
Salmans says pets can be very beneficial to people's mental health
and give them a sense of purpose and responsibility.
McMillan mentions how his father stays in shape walking his dog.

Indulge: This is when we treat ourselves or someone else
with excessive leniency or generosity.
We get something we don't need or maybe do something we shouldn't
but we're gratifying a desire.
Like, I indulge in a massage and an ice-cream sundae on the weekend.
Or, they overindulged their son as a child.
They let him do what he wanted all the time.

Indulge oneself with…

Custom clothes: Salmans also could have said "custom-made clothes."
Clothes that are made specifically for one customer.
A top executive will have custom-made suits and custom-made shoes,
for example.
Ah, likewise we say "custom-built."
Their custom-built home includes a four-car garage, you could say,

Tailor-made
order made は和製英語 英語では made to orderというふうに言います

Stroller:

Pet insurance:

Pocketbook: Up at the top, Ueda says,
"All that can put quite a dent in your pocketbook."
"Wallet" would also work here.
If something puts a dent in your wallet or your pocketbook, ah, it costs
a lot of money, it takes away from how much money you have.
Such as, the new tax cuts are expected to put more money
in your wallet.
Or, the higher taxes will make a big dent in people's pocketbooks.

Pet sitting and kennel fees: I'm sure you know the term babysitting,
you know, looking after children when the parents are away.
We also have terms like "pet-sitting."
I did that when I was a kid in America.
I took care of a lady's cat when she went on vacation.
Likewise, there is "house-sitting," staying in someone's house
while they're away ah, so it doesn't get robbed
and the plants are watered and things like that

House-sitting

Worth something like:

Win the love of: Secure the affections of.
For example, he's a generous, fair boss who won the love of
all his employees.
We also say, "win the heart of."
Like, he won the hearts of the nation with his comeback victory
at the Olympics.

Uncritically and unreservedly: Without criticism and without restraint,
without holding back.
My mother unreservedly supported my living overseas, for example.
Or, he uncritically supported her decision to start her own business.

The plain truth is that: Salmans says, "The plain truth is that pets make
us feel less lonely, anxious and depressed."
This is the truth without any embellishment or qualifications,
the simple facts.
You could say, "The plain truth is that her Japanese is not very good."
Or, "This product looks cheap. I'm sorry but that's a plain truth."

Anxious:

Depressed: We also say, "feel down, ah, feel blue."
I've been feeling very down this week, ah, maybe it's the bad weather.
Or, I felt blue ever since my husband went on a business trip.

Feel down/ feel blue

Push aside:

Stay in shape:
Keep physically fit and maintain a good bodily appearance.
If a person wants to become fit and improve their appearance,
they could say, "I'm trying to get in shape."

Be in good shape
Be in bad shape

That's for today.

See you next time. Bye, bye.

Hello everybody.

Hello and welcome to the show.
This is Heather Howard.
Let's take a look at conversation at work.

Singles With Pets (3)

Salmans says pet ownership has grown more among singles than among
families although it's still more common for families to own pets.
Grace says over half of American households have a pet
and that dogs remain the most popular choice.
The A & A staff list ways that today's pet owners are indulging
their pets including buying fancy accessories and organic food.

Have to do with: Salmans says, "I think it has a lot to do with the big
increase in pet ownership among singles."
It's related to this. This is a cause of something.
Ah, Salmans says "has a lot to do with" so it's a big factor,
a main cause.
Imagine I asked you, "Why didn't he get the job?"
You might answer, "I think it had to do with his lack of experience."

Exceed:

Household: The social unit of people who live together in one dwelling.
And there are many different types of households.
Ah, single person households, elderly households,
ah, single-parent households.
And the person designated on tax forms and other documents
as the leader of the family is called the head of the household.

Household chores 家事
Household goods
Household name

Work out to: A calculation result's in this figure.
Imagine 6 people have dinner together and the check is 14000 yen.
You could say, "Okay. That works out to about 2300 yen per person."
Or, if you translate a 500-word document at 20 yen a word.
You tell the client,
"That's 10000 yen plus sale tax, which works out to 10800yen."

Man's best friend: This is a common way to refer to dogs,
ah refers to their loyalty, the love for their human owners.
A U.S.comedian once joked that she knew women were smarter than
men because diamonds were girls' best friend like the famous song.
But the man's best friend was a dog.

Go to the dogs
Lead a dog's life 惨めな暮らしをする
Dog eat dog

Go for: Choose. A more formal version would be "opt for."
Like, I think I'll go for the fish today. Ah, I should eat more fish.
It can also mean "prefer, ah, like."
Though both meanings involve a sense of choice, you know,
which one do we end up choosing for ourselves.
I go for historical movies and comedies, for example.
Or, my boss didn't go for my new marketing idea.

That goes for me.

Splurge on: Ueda says, "I hear that it's becoming more common
for millennials to splurge on their pets than on themselves."

Medical treatment: Medical procedures and medicines, etc.
that keep us healthy.
We also use more specific words in front of treatment.
Like, he's going in for kidney treatment this week.

The days…are long gone. This hasn't happened.
Ah, no one has done this for a long time.
And you can also put the past activity at the end of the expression.
Like, the days when everyone sent hand-written letters are long gone.
Or, the days are long gone when everyone sent hand-written letters.

Those days are gone forever.

Outside dog:

The same goes for: Down at the bottom,
McMillan says, "The same goes for food."

Cherished loved one:

Growing demand for:

Premium and organic pet food:
Here "premium" means "high cost or quality."
He loves music so he has a premium stereo system.

That's all for today.

See you next time. Bye, bye.

Exclude ex
The detective excluded her from the suspect list.

Conclude   con
Conclude the meeting
Before I conclude,
I’d like to thank you all for listening to my speech.

Hello everybody.

Hello and welcome to the show.
This is Heather Howard.
Let's take a look at conversation at work.

Singles With Pets (2)

McMillan says having a dog conveys the image that a person can
care for it and show it affection.
Salmans describes how pet ownership is on the rise because people are
getting married later and many of them are getting pets.
Salmans says young adults are spending more on pets than previous
generations did and that they consider pets to be part of the family.

Send a clear message that: Clearly convey something, let people know it.
His body language sent a clear message that he didn't want to talk.
Or, her email sent a clear message that she was dissatisfied.

Get the message

We also say, "get the message loud and clear" which again doesn't
necessarily mean that someone spoke in a loud voice.
It just means that the meaning came across very clearly,
we know what they were talking about.
Like, we got the message loud and clear in the meeting.
We have to cut production costs.

Care for: McMillan is talking here about, ah, seeing to something's needs.
You know, making sure that it's fed and gets enough sleep
and all that sort of thing.
We also say, "don't care for" to mean "don't really like something."
We prefer something else.
Like, me personally, I don't really care for horror movies.
It's just not my thing

We care for you.

Keep to a schedule:

Yep: Up at the top, Grace says,
"Yep, that's the basic message that women get."
Here the vignette uses YEP.
Ah, you could say, YUP, yup is another variant.
And obviously, these are used in casual situations.
If my boss asked me, "Ah, are you finished with that translation?"
I would not reply, "Yep."

Pet ownership:

Be on the rise:

On average: Salmans also could have said, "They're getting married
an average of five years later." Either one is okay.
Ah, likewise, he reads 20 books a year on average.
Or, new employees are paid an average of 4.5 million yen.

Take on a new responsibility: "Undertake a new responsibility" would also work here.
Ah, they begin to handle a new responsibility.
Thank you, Carl, for taking on this large translation, you could say.
Or, I think he's taking on too much work.

Weird: Salmans says, "Yes, it may sound a bit weird, but they'd rather
be called that than just plain pet owners."

Empathetic: Relate to someone else's feelings as if we've experienced
those feelings ourselves.
The noun is empathy.
Today's pet owners feel more empathy with their companions.

Pathetic
Empathy
Sympathy 同情
Empathize with…

Millennial:

Less as animals and more like people: Less as X and more like Y is
a very common construction.
Ah, "more Y than X" we're saying.
Things like, I see this less as an expenditure and more like an investment.
Or, I see this as more of an investment than an expenditure.

Humanization: McMillan uses this to mean "attribute human qualities to."
In this case, treat animals like they're people.
The verb would be "humanize."
And both these words can also refer to making something
more compassionate, sympathetic, considerate or making it appear
to have these qualities.
The police department is working to humanize its image, you could say,
to make cops feel more approachable to the public.

Rather: Salmans says,
"they'd rather be called that than just plain pet owners."
They would prefer to be called pet parents.
This is what they want more than something else.
Likewise, you could say, "I'd rather take the train than a taxi."
Or, he'd rather work as a freelancer than a regular company employee.

The rule rather than the exception

I'd rather be safe than sorry.

Look at pets as part of the family:
Salmans says this, "they look at pets as part of the family."
View their pets, consider them to be part of the family unit.
"They see pets as part of the family" would also work here.

That's all for today.

See you next time. Bye, bye.

Hello everybody.

Hello and welcome to the show.
This is Heather Howard.
Let's take a look at conversation at work.

Singles With Pets (1)

Salmans tells the A & A staff about the puppy he bought for himself
and how he's been enjoying a variety of good fortune ever since.
He says getting the dog was a reward for his joining A & A.
Ueda compliments him on his choice of breed.
And Salmans describes how the dog draws a large group of women
when they go for walks together.

Be on cloud nine: Extremely happy, in a state of bliss.
The image is being so happy that we're floating in the sky.
But according to my dictionary, it's not clear what nine refers to.
Why the ninth cloud?
You could say, she's been on cloud nine since her promotion
smiling and humming all day long.
We also say, "in seventh heaven." Just the same meaning basically.
And this apparently refers to a religious belief that God lives
in the highest of seventh spheres that surround the earth.

In seventh heaven

In a state of bliss Great happiness

What's up? What's happening? You know, what's going on?
If someone says, "Heather, could I ask you a question?"
I often reply, "Sure. What's up?"
And we also ask, "What's up with something or someone?" to mean
"What's going on regarding that?"
or "Why is that strange thing happening?"
Things like, "What's up with this new software? It keeps crashing."
Or, what's up with Kevin today? He seems angry.

What are you up to?

Puppy: Up at the top, Salmans says,
"I got myself a puppy for my birthday a couple of months ago,"

Doggy

And in the case of a cat, ah, the baby version is a kitten.
Ah, we also say, kitty, which can apply to a grown-up cat or a baby cat.

Lady luck smiles on me. This is luck imagined as a woman.
You know a goddess fortune.
And she's not always friendly.
You might say,
"I bought some lottery tickets. But lady luck wasn't on my side.
I didn't win a thing."

Lucky dog

Like guess what?

Be dying to:
We use this when we really want something or want to do something.
Like, I'm dying to get that new smartphone.
Or, I'm dying to hear if they liked my proposal.
We also say, "be dying for."
In which case, we put a noun after the expression.
Like, ah, I'm so drowsy. I'm dying for a coffee.
And "to die for."
The expression "be to die for" means something is so good,
so desirable it's practically worth dying to get.
Oh, that suit is to die for. What a beautiful design!

Deserve:

Make a successful job change:

Hoopla about:

Breed: Salmans is talking about the type of dog he got.
Ah, one of my favorite breeds is the malamute.
Ah, I had one as a little girl.
It's similar to a husky.
We also have the expression "a new breed of."
And that means a new type, very different from what existed before.
Such as, Company X has designed a new breed of engine.
Or, Company Y is offering a new breed of mutual funds.

New-breed computer / New-breed smartphone

A vanishing breed

Akita: I've also heard it pronounced [aKIta] ah, over America.

Get surrounded by: Salmans says, "When I take him for a walk,
we often get surrounded by a gaggle of women."

A gaggle of:

Someone's defenses go down: McMillan could also say,
"People lower their defenses."
They're not guarded. They're not shielding their feelings
or being careful with their actions to protect themselves.
Many people ah, lower their defenses after a drink or two.

Warmhearted and approachable: If someone is approachable
we feel comfortable going up to them and interacting with them.
And we use this about things too.
Like, this bank lobby was designed to be warm and approachable
so people don't feel intimidated going in.

That's all for today.

See you next time. Bye, bye.
