Hello everybody.

Hello and welcome to the show.
This is Heather Howard.
Let's take a look at conversation at work.

Restaurant Economy  (6)

Sugita: Now our current vignette talks about on-going trends
in the restaurant industry.
And Alvarez's family history in the business.

H: I like the description of her uncle.
How he said to always ask the customer what was wrong
if they didn't eat the food.
I was in a similar situation just the other day actually.
I went to a restaurant that claimed to serve tacos.
But what I got was not a taco by any definition that I've ever known.
The so-called tuna tacos consisted of the thickest driest tortillas
I've ever encountered.
A small scoop of tasteless tuna on top.
And a couple spoonfuls of chopped-up tomatoes.
I took a bite and I must confess I did what I almost never do.
I spit it out into a napkin.
Yet despite the fact that neither my lunch companion
nor I ate more than one bite literally.
The servers didn't ask us what was wrong with the food.
I was shocked.
Have you ever been in that situation, Mr. Sugita?

S: I've been to a restaurant or two where I didn't like the food
for one reason or another.
Instead of sending it back to the kitchen, I just left it uneaten.
If my server didn't ask what went wrong, I'd never go back there again.

H: Yes. That shows a fundamental lack of concern for the customer
and the lack of pride in their own work.
I usually don't send things back either.
I think I did just once because my then-boyfriend, now-husband
and I were in a bit of physical danger.

S: From the food?

H:Yes.  We were served a hot plate of something in oil.
The problem was there was too much oil.
And it was flying up and spattering us in the face.
So I called the waiter over and asked him to take it away and fix it.
But usually I share your approach.
And I just don't eat bad-tasting things.

S: I also don't like to have salad served on a freezing cold plate.
It advertises the fact that, ah, it wasn't freshly prepared.
And I think it's important to let guests know that the restaurant is out of
something before they read the menu and order the missing dish.

H: Oh, yes. That's one of my pet peeves.
It makes the customer feel cheated, like something attractive
has been dangled in front of them and then snatched away.
Obviously that's not the restaurant's intention, but it feels that way.
Alvarez's uncle reminded me of the owner of the ice cream parlor
where I worked part-time in high school.
We usually couldn't ask if people didn't like something, because they'd
either take their food away, or we'd clean up their tables
after they were gone.
But he likewise encouraged us to be very engaged with the customer.
Offer them a cup of water if they come in looking hot, ask if they'd like
a sample of this or that ice cream - his philosophy was that we should
always be thinking about their comfort and enjoyment.
That was about 30 years ago now.
As I recall, we didn't have any allergy notifications posted
about the ice cream or other foods, quite unlike today.

S: Yes, these days many restaurants in Japan and around the world
will ask if you or anyone in your party may have allergies.
It's a good idea to ask that - allergies are a serious matter,
especially with little children.
Peanut oil, eggs or milk can be quite dangerous for some people.

H: Very true.
It seems like everywhere I go these days, I get asked if my daughter
has any allergies.
Ah, she doesn't.
But it's good to know that eateries are taking those precautions.

That's all for today.

See you next time. Bye, bye.

Hello everybody.

Hello and welcome to the show.
This is Heather Howard.
Let's take a look at conversation at work.

Restaurant Economy  (5)

Alvarez describes working at her uncle's restaurant and how he told her
to always ask what was wrong with the food if the customer didn't eat it.
She describes unpleasant customers
including those with bad table manners.
She urges people to use their napkin often, sit up straight
and not put their elbows on the table.

That's not a bad idea.

Seriously: Joking aside, ah, speaking in seriousness.
Ah, you might say something like, "Thanks to me, sales are up 5%.
Ah, no, no. Seriously. Good work, everybody. "

Learn a valuable lesson:

Summer break:

Run a tight ship: He operated in an efficient, well-managed organization.
The image here is a well-maintained ship with tightly pulled ropes.
You know, back in the days the old sailing ships.
We also use this about homes and other kinds of operations.
You could say, "My mother ran a very tight ship.
No dirty socks on the floor ever and everyone in bed on time."

Uneaten food: Alvarez says,
"One time, I brought a plate of uneaten food back to the kitchen."

Scold: Admonish, ah reprove for some bad action.
It's especially common to use this about people who are lower ranked
or toward children.
Like, she scolded her son for not saying "thank you."
Or, my boss scolded me for wearing scuffed shoes to work.

Scold

Disagreeable: This, ah, term, ah, refers to a range of unpleasant things.
Ah, we could use it about unfriendly people, people who're not polite.
I've certainly met disagreeable sales people in my time.
It can also just mean "unpleasant, not enjoyable."
Ah, I had a very disagreeable conversation with her.

Show disrespect: Alvarez says, "Putting your cell phone, keys or purse
on the table shows disrespect to the staff and other diners."
She could also just say, "disrespect."
Leaving your cell phone on the table disrespects the staff.
Or, shows a lack of respect.

Neglect basic table manners:
Not follow fundamental etiquette at the table.
We also say, "Mind your manners."
Meaning "be polite" ah, especially when scolding children.
Mind your manners. Say, "thank you."

Be tempted to: Be strongly inclined to do something. Feel the desire.
Like, I'm tempted to get a new refrigerator.
Or, I'm really tempted to tell him how I feel.
You'll also hear the expression "tempt fate."
And this means "take a dangerous risk, court danger."
Like, as if we're saying to fate I dare you. Do something bad to me.
Imagine I bring a bottle of orange juice to my desk.
I put it far away from my computer thinking,
"Let's not tempt fate. It would be very easy to spill this on my laptop."

Tempt fate
Don't tempt fate.

Butter bread:

In midair: Alvarez is talking about holding a piece of bread up off
the plate and buttering it, you know as you hold it.
We also say, "in the midair" about things
that are moving through the air.
The book fell off the shelf and she caught it in midair.
Or, these planes can refill in midair.

Sit up straight: Sit with a straight back. Don't slouch.
We also say, "Stand up straight."
I heard that a lot from my mother as a kid. "Stand up straight."
There's also "sit up and take notice."
And that refers to paying attention to something.
Something catching our attention.
His eloquent speech made everyone sit up straight and take notice.

********************************************************************

S: Lidia Grace mentions the importance of good posture.

H: I'm very grateful to my mother on that point.
If there's one thing I heard growing up, and I mean all the time.
It was "stand up straight, stand up straight."
It got drummed into my head. And now I stand up straight.
It is a good thing.
It not only makes us look more alert and professional,
it helps our clothes look nicer.
Just like messy hair, bad posture can ruin a nice outfit.
I'd also say pay attention to our manners.
A friend of mine who's interviewed people for jobs said she's seen
people get up from their chair when an interview is finished,
and not push the chair back in toward the table.
And it gave the impression of carelessness,
and a lack of concern for others.
So we should be alert to little things like that.

Sit up straight: Sit with a straight back, with erect posture.
We also say, "stand up straight",  which I heard constantly while I was
growing up all the time. My mother told me,
"Stand up straight. Stand up straight. Heather. Don't slouch."

That's all for today.

See you next time. Bye, bye.

Hello everybody.

Hello and welcome to the show.
This is Heather Howard.
Let's take a look at conversation at work.

Restaurant Economy  (4)

Alvarez says online sales are growing fast in the restaurant industry.
Nissen attributes this to changing demographics and lifestyles
and says busy people don't have time to cook.
Alvarez says the future looks rosy for the restaurant industry
but success is not guaranteed in that competitive business.

Shift the activities online:

Be stuck in: Be mired in, be unable to get out of.
Ah "mired" is a good word to know as well.
She's stuck in her old-fashioned ideas about marketing, for example.
Or, he's mired in a boring job.

Mire

Bricks-and-mortar world: The world of actual, physical stores
and restaurants as opposed to online and mail order.
Mortar is a binding material that holds bricks
and other construction materials together.
And sometimes we use it metaphorically.
Like, Carrie is the mortar that holds our office together.

Not really. McMillan says,
"restaurants seem to be firmly stuck in the bricks-and-mortar world."
And Alvarez replies, "Not really."
This is a softer way to say "no" or "that is not the case."
Imagine someone asks you, "Did you like the presentation?"
You might say, "No. Not really. It was too long and complicated."

Place one's order online: Submit an order for something online
via the internet.
And you can place an order for lots of things.
Ah, I placed an order for that new smartphone last week.
Or, the airline placed an order for ten new jets.

Be projected to grow:

Demographics: The makeup of a group of people.
Ah, the ratio of men to women, what jobs they have, ages.
You'll also hear about the demographic trends.
Like, more people living alone or people moving to urban areas
or away from urban areas.

Opt for convenience:

Nutritious dish:
A dish that provides nutrition, ah, that's beneficial to the body.
Nori, seafood is very nutritious obviously.
So are natto, fermented soy beans.

Not to mention:

Overall: Down at the bottom, Alvarez says,
"the future looks bright for the food-service industry overall,"

No guarantee: Nothing is sure, the outcome is not assured.
There's no guarantee we'll profit from stock investments, for example.
Past performance doesn't guarantee future returns.

Tough and competitive: Hard and full of competition.
Ah, we also say people are competitive.
Meaning, they actively compete with others,
you know, they want to do better.
My daughter is very competitive.
She gets really upset, if she loses a race, for example.

Be all about: This is the dominant factor in some situation.
It's the most important influence on the outcome,
or, the strongest influence on people's actions.
Like, learning a foreign language is all about practice.
Or, she is all about getting ahead.
Her career is the most important thing in her life.

Make a living:

Gosh: This is a very mild expletive. It will not offend anyone.
There's also "shoot."
But I found I have to be careful with that one because sometimes
people think I used the stronger version(sh*t) when I didn't.

Yes. I expect to receive my orders in a timely manner.

*timely / in a timely manner
Well, they're quite similar. "Timely" meaning "promptly" or "on time."
And "in a timely manner" meaning "within a reasonable time frame."
I think the phrase "in a timely manner" sounds a little more polite
than just using "timely."

Hello everybody.

Hello and welcome to the show.
This is Heather Howard.
Let's take a look at conversation at work.

Restaurant Economy  (3)

Nissen says longer working hours and more dining options have led
Americans to spend more money in restaurants.
Alvarez says the country is experiencing a golden age of restaurants
but that money is being spread more thinly among more establishments.
Ueda quotes a friend as saying that many restaurateurs are raising prices
to pay the rent.

Senior: An elderly person.
Seniors are increasingly travelling overseas, you could say.
"Senior citizen" is also a useful polite term.

The aged

On a fixed income: Living on a pension, on payments of money
that are the same every time, ah, usually every month.
They don't do overtime or other work
so the amount of money doesn't change.
I've also heard about a fixed budget, you know, meaning a company
or person has a set unchanging amount of money

fixed income / fixed budget / of no fixed abode

Decent food: In this case, "decent" means "satisfactory, pretty good."
Things like, I finally got a decent night sleep last night.
Or, I got a decent return on my investment.

Decent wear

And sometimes if we were entering a room and someone might be
changing or naked, we knock on the door and say, "Are you decent?"

Reasonable price:

Ever-widening choice: Nissen says,
"Americans have an ever-widening choice of dining options."
The choices available are continually increasing, always expanding.
Ever-hyphen is very useful this way.
You can use it in many different situations.
The ever-increasing number of foreign tourists in Japan, for example.
Or, Company X's ever-shrinking profits.

ever-shrinking  ever-increasing

Option:

Golden age: A time, a period when something flourishes.
When quality and activity is at its peak. The 1970s are considered
a golden age for American movies, for example.
Or, the renaissance was a golden age of many things:
painting, science, literature.

Eating and drinking establishment: Personally I use "establishment"
most about restaurants and bars,
yeah, places where we're served food and drink.
If we say, "the establishment", that's the established powers, authorities,
you know, the system of power, ah, in a government or situation.
Many politicians, when they get elected, they promise to fight
the establishment, you know, the powers that exploit ordinary people.

The Establishment

Glut:

Eatery: This is an informal way to say a restaurant:
eating and /or drinking establishment.
It combines the word eat with the suffix -ery.
And that's a place where you do, sell, make, whatever.
A bakery. A winery.
A cannery where you put food in cans.

Put a lot of pressure on:

Fall-off: Down at the bottom, Ueda refers to a fall-off in dining traffic.
A drop, a  decline. A drop-off would work here too.
There was a sharp drop-off in our sales last summer.
Or, we've seen a steep fall-off in tourism.

Dining traffic: In this case, "traffic" refers to the flow of people
who go to dining establishments.
Likewise, foot traffic is how many people walk through a certain area.
Foot traffic is very important for restaurants,
for example and art galleries.

Pedestrian traffic

Labor costs: The costs of employing people.
Ah, "personnel costs" would also work here.
Ah, the company laid off several staff to reduce personnel costs.

Restaurateur:

That's all for today.

See you next time. Bye, bye.

Hello everybody.

Hello and welcome to the show.
This is Heather Howard.
Let's take a look at conversation at work.

Restaurant Economy  (2)

Alverez describes the kind of foods served at her aunt and uncle's
new restaurant and says Puerto Rican cuisine emphasizes local
ingredients and seasonings.
She goes on to say that her aunt and uncle found a good location
in downtown Orlando and that their customers include Latinos
and people from the wider community.

Orlando

Land on one's feet: Survive a difficult situation, come out of it well.
This uses the image of a cat that falls but manages to land on its feet.
Such as: He got laid off but he landed on his feet.
He got a new job within a few months.
"Bounce back" would also work in this situation.

Feature: Alvarez says,
"the restaurant is a Puerto Rican family-style restaurant that features
Latin fusion cooking."

Latin fusion cooking: Fusion, the combination of different elements, ah.
We can use this about many different things, not just food.
His music is a fusion of classical and jazz, for example.

Fusion cooking / multiethnic cuisine

Combine:

Ethnic cuisine: Cuisine, specific to a certain cultural or national group.
When I was a kid, my favorite ethnic restaurant served Mongolian food.
You picked out all your own ingredients and then you cooked them up
on this sort of big metal dome.
It's a lot of fun especially for a kid.

Incorporate:

Influence: Here "influence" is a noun,
meaning "something that influences, has an effect."
Picasso is one of the main influences on his work.
We also have the term "influencer" ,which refers to people
who influence others in certain areas, affect their behavior.
So influencer marketing focuses on influential people instead of
the overall target market.

Influencer

Place a premium on:

Seasoning:

Ingredient: Alvarez is talking about the components used in making food.
But we also use "ingredients" about other elements of a whole,
things that combine for a final result, a final product.
Such as: This product has all the ingredients for a big hit.
It's easy to use. It has a nice design, good price.

Vegetarian:

Tortilla:

Locally grown produce:

Organic:

Comfort food: Down towards the bottom, Alvarez says, "they also
want comfort food - dishes that take them back to their childhood."

Comfort food is usually not good for us.
But it makes us feel good to eat it.
There's a sense of, you know, feeling like a kid.
You know, being comforted by the food.
Lot of my comfort foods start with "P."
Pizza, Pretzels, Peanut butter.

Peanut butter and jelly sandwich / rice pudding

How can you say that?
Peanut butter and jelly is the best.
lol  Now I wanna say … I want you… lol

What exactly is: Ueda asks, "what exactly is fusion cooking?"
He wants a specific explanation, a detailed explanation.
You could also say things like, "What exactly is the problem?"
Or, what happened exactly?

Be a hit with: Nissen says,
"I bet that kind of food is a hit with the local Latino community."
I bet it's very popular among this group of people.
Likewise, this new smartphone is a big hit with young consumers.
Or, this brand is a big hit with women.

Take someone back:
Alvarez mentions "dishes that take them back to their childhood."
That remind someone of a past time, make them think of that time.
You could say, "Ah, this beer takes me back to my college days.
I always drank this on the weekends."
Or, seeing the new recruits takes me back to my first days on the job.

That's all for today.

See you next time. Bye, bye.

Hello everybody.

Hello and welcome to the show.
This is Heather Howard.
Let's take a look at conversation at work.

Restaurant Economy  (1)

Ueda describes the taste element of umami which has now become
a part of the English vocabulary.
Alvarez says her aunt and uncle who are in the restaurant business
have probably heard of it.
She talks about how they've opened up a new eatery in Orlando, Florida,
which is doing very well.

Umami: This term is in English dictionaries now.
Ah, my main dictionary defines it as a taste sensation that is meaty
or savory and is produced by several amino acids and nucleotides.

Primary taste element: Ueda says,
"It's the fifth primary taste after sweet, sour, salty and bitter."

Roughly:

Broth-like: Hyphen-like is a very convenient suffix.
Ah, though there's not always a hyphen. It depends on a word.
It gives us a short way to say something in a manner of, similar to.
He put together a movie-like presentation for the sales conference.
So the presentation resembled a short movie.
Or, a wolf-like animal was spotted in the neighborhood.
So they're not sure if it was a wolf but it looked like one.

Savory: Ueda uses savory in the culinary sense,
which means "tastes of salt or spices and not sweet."
But "savory" can't just mean "appealing to the taste or smell."
A restaurant might say in an add "We offer an array of savory dishes
guaranteed to satisfy any palate."

Culinary term:
An expression specific to food related activity, to culinary activities.
Ah, likewise, there are legal terms and medical terms.
And such expressions over all are often called "industry terms."

Legal terms / medical terms / medical terms  terminology
Technical terminology

One industry term in journalism is "lede, L-E-D-E."
And that's the introductory part that makes you want to read
the rest of the story, that tells you the point of the story to come.

lead

Rich in: Have a lot of something, contain a lot of it.
This fruit is rich in Vitamin C.
And you could also use it about things like, this region is rich in history.
He's rich in friends.

Palate: Around the middle, Ueda says,
"It may seem new to the American palate,"
Our sense of taste.
Some people are said to have a very sensitive palate or a refined palate.
And that means they're very sensitive to subtle differences in taste.

Chemist: Ueda is talking about a scientist who studies chemistry.
But in Britain, this can also mean the person in a pharmacy
who's trained to prepare and dispense drugs.
In America, we would call that person a pharmacist.

Drugstore / chemist's,  chemist's shop

Chef:

Odds are: Chances are…
Chances are they have.
Odds

As you may recall: Down at the bottom, Alvarez says,
"As you may recall, they ran a small restaurant in San Juan
before the hurricane destroyed it."

Team up with: Join forces, work together on something.
Company X and Company Y teamed up to design a new EV.
Or, Jeff and Trevor teamed up on a presentation.

EV electric vehicle

Solid: Reliable, sound, good quality.
You could say,
"This marketing plan is solid. I think it will be very effective."
Or, we've had solid sales growth this past year.

Financial backing:

Business is booming: A booming business is flourishing.
It's very successful.
Things like, business is booming at that shop.
There's a line just to get in the door.

That's all for today.

See you next time. Bye, bye.

Hello everybody.

Hello and welcome to the show.
This is Heather Howard.
Let's take a look at conversation at work.

Revamping Sexual Harassment Policy (6)

Sugita: Our current vignette discusses sexual harassment
in the workplace and how it often goes unreported.
I hope you've never experienced that, Heather?

Heather: I never have. No. I've been extraordinary lucky in that regard.
The Me-Too movement has highlighted lately just how widespread
this problem still is around the world and it's deeply unsettling.
What about you, Mr. Sugita? Have you come across this in your career?

S: Yes. Unfortunately. At one point I worked in the Tokyo office of
a multinational company where there were frequent guests from abroad.
Some Western visitors regularly hugged or kissed the female Japanese
staff, which by today's standards clearly constituted sexual harassment
and was often disdained by my female colleagues.
They tended not to speak up, however, and rationalized such acts as
"Western custom."

H: It is not. Ugh. I wish I could have been there and tell them it's not.

S: One such perpetrator tried the same approach with an American
colleague while visiting the New York office - and immediately got his face
slapped in plain view of the entire staff.
News like that travels fast internally and it was welcomed
with silent applause in the Tokyo office.
He lost a lot of face with that incident.
I'm happy to say he behaved quite properly on his subsequent visits
to Tokyo.

H: Well, I might say, "Kudos to the woman who slapped him."
The vignette says some women aren't sure who to report
sexual harassment to, or they don't want to ruin the man's career.
Another big problem, I think, is that women around the world
are brought up to be "nice."
We have to be sweet, gentle, non-aggressive, or we risk getting labeled
with the b-word.
I think societies around the world have got to get over that, and make
it acceptable for women to push back, literally and metaphorically.
I've read, for example, that we shouldn't force children,
especially little girls, to accept unwanted hugs and other physical affection.
If we make them kiss or hug someone when they don't want to,
we're telling the child, "You don't have control over your own body,"
which can be a very dangerous message.

S: The vignette also mentions stories of women being ignored
or retaliated against in cases of sexual harassment.

H: I can imagine how helpless and angry and frustrated that must
make a person feel.
Not only are they subjected to the first horrible experience
and often it's not an isolated incident.
Often there are multiple incidents of abuse.
They're made to feel like no one believes them or will help them.
I remember reading about a journalist who said she was forcibly kissed
by a very prominent man she interviewed.
She said she told a former professor of hers about the incident at the time
but decided after their conversation that it would be best
not to say anything.
The two of them felt it would be a he-said-she-said situation
and the man would probably try to destroy her if she came forward.
I've also heard of accusers' personal information like phone numbers
and addresses being revealed online and elsewhere.

S: Ueda asks about the line between acceptable
and unacceptable behavior.

H: I'd say McMillan has the right approach.
You can be complimentary but keep it short.
There's nothing wrong occasional "that's a nice dress" or
"your hair looks nice" like that.
But leave it there. There's no need for a monologue on the subject.
And don't compliment a woman just on things like that.
Pay attention to our work too.
We always like to be complimented on our minds.

That's all for today.

See you next time. Bye, bye.

Hello everybody.

Hello and welcome to the show.
This is Heather Howard.
Let's take a look at conversation at work.

Revamping Sexual Harassment Policy  (5)

Grace says harassment can be perpetrated by a wide range of people.
And Ueda asks for clarification on a point he's unsure of.
McMillan gives an example of appropriate vs. inappropriate behavior
at work.
And Grace assures the staff that women who report harassment
won't be ignored or punished at A & A.

Broaden the focus: Nissen means they're expanding what they cover
in their training programs, what they concentrate on.
Likewise, you could say, "I'm broadening the focus of the report
to include Europe as well as America."
Or, on the opposite side, you can say,
"We should narrow the focus of the report and just deal with America."

Follow the letter of the law:
This expression is contrasted with the spirit of the law.
The letter of the law is the literal interpretation of the law,
of the word's specific words in a law.
The spirit of the law is the fundamental principles and goals
on which the law is based.
When doing my taxes, for example, I follow the letter of the law.

Automatically: Grace says,
"sexual harassment doesn't automatically mean the perpetrator is
of the opposite sex."
In this case, "automatically" means "always, as the result of specific
conditions, rules or laws."
The condition, the situation here is sexual harassment.
But that situation doesn't always mean that the perpetrator is
a man against a woman or a woman against a man.
Likewise, you could say, "If you were born in the United States,
you are automatically a U.S. citizen."
Or, being a woman doesn't automatically mean "you want children."

As a matter of course

Work environment:

Unclear on: I'm not sure about this. I don't fully understand.
Such as, I'm unclear on what documents I need to get a visa.

I'd better call the embassy.
And it can also mean "doesn’t clearly state."
Like, ah, this contract is unclear on paid leave.
It doesn't clearly state how much paid leave you get.

Draw the line between: Differentiate between things, not confuse them.
Such as, where do we draw the line between exaggerating and lying?
Or, is exaggerating, is that inherently lying?
Or, where do we draw the line between taking breaks and slacking off?

Draw the line between exaggerating and lying
Embellishment

Problematic: Behavior that leads to problems, that is questionable.
The media asked problematic questions about her personal life.
Or, his repeated mistakes are problematic.

Subjective:  ↔ objective

Depending on:

McMillan says,
"it may be OK to tell a coworker that her new hairdo looks nice,"
The way her hair is arranged or style.
Ah, hairstyle would also work here.
I prefer a short hairdo in summer, for example.

hairstyle

Outpouring:

Ignore:

Retaliate: This is to hurt someone.
To do some kind of damage in response to damage we feel
they've done to us.
It's often considered a bad thing.
At the very least, it indicates, ah, acrimonious situation.
Like, the company retaliated by firing the whistleblower.
Or, Country A impose tariffs on Country B.
So Country B retaliated by also imposing tariffs.
Other similar expressions are "get back at", "take revenge on."

Retaliation

Tit for tat

Definition of tit for tat
: an equivalent given in return (as for an injury) : retaliation in kind
And we also have the phrasal verb "pay back"

I paid him back.

Likewise: Grace says,
"Likewise, the harasser can be the employee's supervisor, customer,
coworker or supplier."
Similarly, in a similar way.
Ah,"do likewise" means "do something similar."
Company X has released a new model.
And Company Y is expected to do likewise.

I'm glad to see you.   Likewise. I'm glad to see you too.

That's all for today.

See you next time. Bye, bye.

Hello everybody.

Hello and welcome to the show.
This is Heather Howard.
Let's take a look at conversation at work.

Revamping Sexual Harassment Policy  (4)

The A & A staff talk about why women often don't come forward
after they've been sexually harassed.
And Nissen describes how a manager at his former company unfairly fired
a subordinate when she decided to end their romantic relationship.
Grace says A & A is expanding its employee training on sexual harassment
and is also starting an online training program.

Destroy someone's career: Up at the top, Grace says, "women may be
worried about the possibility of destroying someone's career,"
Or, ruining someone's career.
"Ruin" would also be appropriate here.
Now I've seen ah, statements, like "partly destroy."
But that's actually a contradiction.
"Destroy" means "completely ruin," you know,
so that it doesn't exist or it can't function like it did before.
So we should say "damage" when the harm is not complete.

Destroy

Better expressions would be "severely damaged"  or "almost destroyed."

Be accused of:

Show favoritism toward: Unfairly give someone help or advantages
that we don't give to others.
The implication is that they haven't earned that help or those advantages.
They don't deserve to be so favored.
And when favoritism like that is shown to a relatives, that's "nepotism."
For example, this company doesn't allow relatives to work for
other relatives to avoid nepotism.

Nepotism

Subordinate:

To make matters worse:
Something makes an already bad situation even worse.
Imagine, I'm late for an appointment.
And then to make matters worse, I don't have any business cards.
So I look even more unprofessional.

Find a flimsy excuse: When we're talking about tangible things,
"flimsy" means "weak, thin, ah, insubstantial."
Like, it's so cold and she only has a flimsy jacket on.
Or, the flimsy table collapsed when I put my bag on it.
Like Nissen, we also say reasons and arguments are flimsy.
They're weak. They don't stand up to our examination.
You could say, "His justification for spending so much was very flimsy."

First-class heel:
In the middle, McMillan says, "Wow, what a first-class heel."
"First-class" means "one of the best."
We use it like McMillan does, to mean a really bad thing
or about actually good things.
Jane is a first-class writer.
Carl is a first-class jerk.
And heel is a jerk, a dishonorable person,
someone who does contemptible things.
If a coworker stole someone else's idea, you say, "Wow! what a heel!"

Heel / jerk

Fourth-class male

lol
Speak up: Express your opinion or position, make it heard.
There's a nuance that this may be hard, you know,
maybe there are risks involved.
Or, you need courage to stand out from a group.
Things like, if you want a raise, you've gotta speak up.
You've gotta tell the boss.
Or, is everyone okay with our new marketing strategy?
If you have concerns, now is the time to speak up.

Speak up for a friend

For fear of: Because we're afraid something might happen.
Because we want to prevent it from happening.
I always leave 30 minutes early for fear of being late, for example.
Or, in winter, she avoids large crowds for fear of catching the flue.

Misconduct:
This is a good all-purpose term for a lot of unacceptable behavior.
It's often paired with various professions to indicate bad actions,
ah, in those areas.
Judicial misconduct, police misconduct, academic misconduct.
And all of our overall professional misconduct.

Be guilty of:

No matter how:

Perp (<perpetrator):This is someone who's done a bad thing.
It can be actually criminal or just bad.
Like, "Oh, somebody ate my sandwich that was in the fridge.
I'm gonna find the perp."

Come forward:

Mandatory:

Frequency:

Launch:

That's all for today.

See you next time. Bye, bye.

Okay. Let's listen to today's business scene.

Now, Shibuya Dot Com is a pioneer in providing online shopping platforms
in Japan.
Nearly 70% of our revenue comes from the domestic market.
But our overseas business has been growing.

May I ask... Do you deliver goods directly from Japan to overseas?

Ah, I was expecting that kind of question.
We'll deal with that point later.

In Europe, our name hasn't been as well-known as it is (known)
in Asia and the U.S.
However, this is beginning to change.
So, we've partnered with a couple of platform providers in the EU
to cope with the growing demand for Japanese products.

*Ah, yes. I think that platform provider is used extensively
when talking about various Internet services.
Another good example is a platform provider for web-blogs.

We'll have a Q & A session.  So, please hold your questions until the end.

Bear with me for a second.

Well, this has happened to me very frequently in the past.
I always take a couple of moments to think
and then give the best answer I possibly can.
If I'm asked something that I have no idea about,
I'm usually honest that I don't know.
But I try to give some helpful feedback if I can.

Hello everybody.

Hello and welcome to the show.
This is Heather Howard.
Let's take a look at conversation at work.

Revamping Sexual Harassment Policy  (3)

Lyons says managers today know that a certain kind of workplace culture
must be created to prevent sexual harassment.
And Grace says the new handbook has a section
on so-called civility training.
Ueda adds that training is need to encourage bystanders to speak
up about what they witness and that many victims don't report
their mistreatment.

Not enough on its own: This alone is not sufficient. It will not do the job.
In contrast, you can say, "This anti-virus software is enough on its own.
It does the job very well."
We also attach adjectives to this phrase.
Such as: His constant lateness was annoying enough on its own
but he was also very rude.

Workplace culture:

As equals: As people of equal stature, with equal rights.
He always treats female staff as equals, for example.
Or, why do brand new hires expect to be treated as equals
with veteran staff?

First among equals

Regardless of: According to my dictionary,
both "regardless" and"irregardless" are actual words.
They both mean "without being affected by something."
So things like, they launched the product regardless or irregardless of
the pessimistic market survey.
But "irregardless" is considered non-standard.

Cf. But "irregardless" is considered to be non-standard.

Gender or sexual orientation:

Civility training: Grace says, "There's a section on what's called
civility training that's designed to fill that gap."

Fill a gap:
Provide something that is lacking, ah, fulfill a role that is not being played.
We also say, "fill the gap," which is referring to a specific need, ah.
Everyone is helping fill the gap while Sarah is on maternity leave,
for example.

Healthy: In this case, "healthy" means "it will be beneficial to people's
mental state."
Like, it's healthy to express our feelings: anger, sadness, whatever.
It's unhealthy to bottle them up.

Bottle up anger

Long overdue:

Foster: Help something develop or grow.
The government is trying to foster entrepreneurs, for example.
Or, multilateral agreements foster international cooperation and growth.

Tolerance:

Bystander: Ueda says, "there should be more training to encourage
bystanders to report bad behavior when they see it."

Turn a blind eye to: Know that something is happening but ignore it.
Pretend that doesn't exist.
Company X turned a blind eye to its aging equipment for years.
Or, authorities turned a blind eye to the traffic problems in that area.

Turn a deaf ear to…

Offensive: Unpleasant or insulting.
Likely to make people angry or shocked.
She makes offensive jokes about overweight people, for example.
Or, we'd better throw the garbage out. That is an offensive smell.

Powerful figure:

Incident:
An occurrence, ah, usually something violent, dangerous or criminal.
Police were called to the scene of the incident, you might say.
Or, there was an incident at my office today.
Two guys got in a fight.

Inappropriate: Lyons is talking about behavior that's morally wrong
or that goes against social standard.
"Inappropriate" can also mean "not right in a certain situation."
Like, denim cutoffs are fine for the beach
but they're inappropriate at the office.

That's all for today.

See you next time. Bye, bye.
