Hello everybody.

Hello and welcome to the show.
This is Heather Howard.
Let's take a look at conversation at work.

Golden Years (6)

S: Our current vignette discusses the financial problems faced
by many elderly people in the United States.
Pat McMillan says the student loan situation there is only making
the situation worse and that over 40 million Americans have
at least one student loan to pay off.

H: This is a situation that I keep watching with absolute dread.
As I mentioned before my undergraduate tuition in the U.S. was $16,000
in my final year, the 1991-92 school year.
When I checked it in June 2015, about two years ago,
the same school cost almost $49,000.
Well, I just checked again, and I am not happy to announce that
it has now topped $50,000.
I finished college with about $10,000 in loans that I paid off over 10 years.
If we multiply that by how much more the same college would cost me
today, I would have finished with more than $31,000 in loans.
At least that much, because I also had scholarships and a part-time job.
What if I hadn't had those?
It's a crazy situation. It's just wrong.
We can't be asking young workers to start out with that kind of burden.
Especially when so many worth-while professions,
teaching, journalism, social welfare are not big money earners.
People will be forced to turn away from those areas.

S: The vignette also mentions how many people keep working
because they enjoy it and that some elderly people who stop working
feel at loose ends.

H: I think my dad has experienced that feeling.
He still has retirement with a lot of activity including some work
and a lot of travel.
But It hink sometimes it can be hard to fill the days.
Happily though he's also an avid reader and keeps up actively with politics.
So overall I think he is okay.

S: Will he be aging in place?

H: He still hasn't made a final decision, but he's been looking into
independent living in a place where he wouldn't need a car as much
and could live in a smaller home.
He's leaning toward Arizona, Nevada or New Mexico if he goes that way.
I hope he does go, personally.
He stubbornly insists on staying very physically active, which I know is
good for him overall, but I worry about him during the Alaskan winters.
Too much ice and snow to slip and fall on.
And if he moved somewhere like Arizona, he wouldn't have those long,
long winter evenings, which can get pretty depressing.

S: Would he need to get rid of a lot of things if he moved?

H: No. Which would certainly make things easier.
My father's always been devoted to saving and has never been
a big shopper.
So his home is pretty sparsely furnished.
My mother, on the other hand, she'd never give up her books,
for one thing even if she moved to a much smaller place.
She'd just stock them up everywhere.

S: What about you, Heather?
Do you think you will ever retire?

H: I don't, actually.
I really like the work I do, especially translation, and I think it will help
keep my mind sharp as I age.
Going back and  forth between two languages is a great mental workout,
as is searching within English for the right phrases.
And it's something I can do without a lot of physical effort.
I don't even need to leave the house as long as I have a computer
and an internet connection, so even when I slow down physically,
I can keep going.

It's been a great year. We had a lot of fun.
And we hope you'll be with us for the year to come.
Bye-bye.

Hello everybody.

Hello and welcome to the show.
This is Heather Howard.
Let's take a look at conversation at work.

Golden Years (5)

Lyons recommends that people plan well ahead of time for retirement
focusing on things like finances, healthcare and diet.
McMillan says it was very hard for his parents to move because they
loved their home but that his father had an accident
and found it difficult to get around afterward.
He says his parents moved into a condo but that they had to throw away
a lot of junk.

No matter what: Regardless, in any case, whatever happens.
Sales people are often told, "Be polite to the customers no matter what."
So even if customer's rude, you have to be polite.
Or, we have to finish today no matter what.

Lifestyle option:

Put together:

Well in advance: Long before something is needed.
Or long before something happens.
For example,
If you're travelling during Golden Week, get your tickets well in advance.
Or, he started well in advance of the deadline.

Quality of life:

Be etched in stone: be set in concrete
And "be set in stone" is okay too.

Convince: In the middle, McMillan says, "I was finally able to convince
my parents to sell their big old house."

Contemplate: McMillan means "think about something as a possibility."
Like, she's contemplating starting her own business.
Or, he contemplated changing jobs last year.
There's a nuance here of thinking slowly and carefully.
And we often use "contemplate" to stress that meaning.
Like, I contemplated my future over a long cup of coffee.

Make one's way around the house: McMillan could also say,
"get around the house."
It became harder for his father to move around.
Also things like, without a car, it's very hard to get around the city.
Or, we made our way around on the trains.

Condo(<condominium)

Quite a job: It was a big job or a hard job.
We also say, "have quite a job."
Like, I had quite a job convincing him to stay.
You know, it was very difficult to do.
Or, this translation will be quite a job.
I'll need at least a week to do it.

He's quite a man.

Clear out: Empty a place of something.
We cleared all the old food out of the refrigerator.
It can also mean "leave a place, especially quickly."
Like, everyone cleared out of the office quick on the Christmas Eve.

Junk: Just to make sure, this is the worthless things, things we don't want.
Ah, it can also be a verb
Like, I junked my old TV last week.

Accumulate:

Over the years:

Downsize one's lifestyle: Make smaller, put on a smaller scale.
I also found the examples of "upsize" meaning "make bigger."
Like, a married couple might want to upsize their living arrangements
after having a baby

That's often the case: McMillan says,
"it was hard for his parents to contemplate moving."
And Ueda replies, "Yes, that's often the case, isn't it?"
That's often the situation. That's often what is going on.
"As is often the case" is a similar expression though this is more formal.
You might say in a report,
As is often the case, actual sales were slightly below our forecast.

Walker: McMillan says his father had to use a walker after breaking his hip.
This is a frame that elderly people sometimes use to help them walk.
But an injured person might use it too.
Like he had to use a walker for a while after he was injured during the race.

That's all for today.

See you next time. Bye, bye.

Hello everybody.

Hello and welcome to the show.
This is Heather Howard.
Let's take a look at conversation at work.

Golden Years (4)

Ueda says robots can do household chores for elderly people
and act as companions.
McMillan talks about more convenient places for seniors to live.
And Lyons describes measures being taken in parts of New York
including making signs easier to read.
Ueda adds that some cities are adjusting traffic signals
to give people more time to cross the road.
But Collins says many seniors still choose retirement communities.

Promising development:

Feel less isolated: Here "isolated" means "without contact with others,
cut off from other people."
We also say things like an isolated incident or an isolated case.
Something that happens only once and isn't connected to a trend.
Like, she lost her temper once. But it was an isolated incident.
Normally she's very calms.
Or, this is not an isolated case.
We've had lots of problems with this software.

This is only an isolated case.

Companion: A person or a pet who spends a lot of time with someone.
That relationship, that friendship in support is companionship.
You could say, she reads to elderly people who live alone.
It helps provide them with companionship.

A person or a pet.
Companion animal / animal companion

Public transportation: Buses, trains, you know, forms of transportation
that anyone in the public can use as long as they pay a fare.
I wouldn't call taxies public transportation because strangers don't
usually share them.
Things like: We have to rent a car.
There's not a lot of public transportation in that city.
Or taxies are too expensive. I usually take public transportation.

Mass transition

City authorities: Around the middle, Lyons says, "city authorities
have established what are known as Aging Improvement Districts."

Aging improvement District:

Take a break:

Pedestrian with mobility issues: When we say something issues,
it means a problem in that area.
If I say, she has anger management issues.
It means she has trouble controlling her anger,
trouble expressing it properly.
Or a company could say, "We have serious quality control issues.
And we need to resolve them immediately."

Cross the street: Go from one side to the other.
The place where we're supposed to do that is a crosswalk.
Parents often say to kids, "Don't cross in the middle. Use a crosswalk."
And when the bridges over our heads for crossing big streets.
Those are often called a pedestrian overpass.

Pedestrian overpass / Pedestrian bridge

Opt for: At the bottom, Collins says,
"many seniors still opt fro retirement communities"

Professional caregiver:

On staff:

Look after: Watch over, take care of.
When I was in high school, I looked after our neighbor's cat
when she went on vacation.
Or, I'd like to get a dog but I don't have time to look after it.

As needed: We use this when something is adjusted or done
according to need.
A doctor might say, "Take this headache medicine as needed."
When your head hurts, in other words, not at a set time every day.

Do not have to go far to: McMillan says, "they don't have to go far
to enjoy restaurants museums and concert halls."
Something is close by, it can be accessed quickly.
We also use this when there is a lot of something.
Because then obviously it's going to be nearby if there's a lot of it.
For example, you don't have to go far to find a coffee shop in Seattle.
They are all over the place.
Or, you don't have to go far to find good restaurants in Tokyo.

Put out:
Lyons says, "Stores are encouraged to put out chairs for older folks."
To bring something out for other people to use or consume.
When guests came over, my mother put out snacks.

That's all for today.

See you next time. Bye, bye.

Hello everybody.

Hello and welcome to the show.
This is Heather Howard.
Let's take a look at conversation at work.

Golden Years (3)

Collins and Lyons describe things that Lyon's parents like about
living in Costa Rica including the good weather and healthcare.
McMillan talks about the practice of aging in place or elderly people living
as long as possible in a familiar place and how various support services
help make that possible.
Lyons refers to the expenditures necessary including building
wheelchair ramps and widening doorways.

Go further: Last longer because we're not spending as much of something
or using as much of it.
We also say "make something go further."
Use certain tactics to spend less or use less.
I make my money go further on vacation by sharing a condo with friends
or family

World-class:At the top, Lyons says, "Costa Rica has world-class hospitals,"

Affordable: Within the range that people can reasonably pay.
Ah, this is a very affordable hotel, for example.
Now, the verb "afford" can mean
"be able to pay, you know, have enough money."
Like, John could afford a better car. But he's very frugal.
It can also mean be able to do something without disadvantage or risk
to yourself.
Like, I can't afford to be late again. My boss is already upset.

Very frugal

Senior-friendly:

Wheelchair ramp: A slope for wheelchairs to move up and down.
And ramps and such are what we call handicapped access:
measures to help people with different physical conditions enter
and leave and get around.

Walker:

Walk-in shower: We also say "walk-in closet" for a closet that's large
enough to be entered like a room.

The list goes on:

Surveillance camera: At the bottom, Collins says, "Surveillance cameras
let their relatives keep track of them."

GPS(=global positioning system):
GPS system

Keep track of: Stay informed, monitor what's happening with someone
or something.
He keeps track of his calorie intake with a smartphone app.
Or, he never keeps track of his spending.

App=application アプリ

Track

Be glad of: Lyons says,
"Yes, they're particularly glad of that when it comes to healthcare."
They're glad about it, they're grateful for it.
I think this is a little more formal sounding.
You could say, "I was very glad of Stephanie's help with my translation."

Age in place: In the middle, McMillan says,
90 percent of Americans 65 or older expect to "age in place."
"In place" refers to "stay in where one is."
Runners, for example, if they come to a red light, will jog in place,
you know, to keep their heart rate up. They'll run in the same spot.
We also use it about things like the company will keep
its paternity leave program in place.

heart rate 脈拍

Keep something in place

Enable: McMillan talks about volunteers who enable older folks to
have comfortable and fulfilling lives at home.
Who make it possible to do something.
Online shopping malls enable people to sell their handicrafts.
Or, cellphones enable us to send videos around the world.

Lead an independent live: At the bottom, Collins says,
"Technology is making it easier for seniors to lead independent lives."
Here "lead" means "spend your life a certain way,
pursue a certain kind of life."
As in: She wants to lead a quiet life.
Or, he's always led a very healthy life.

That's all for today.

See you next time. Bye, bye.

Hello everybody.

Hello and welcome to the show.
This is Heather Howard.
Let's take a look at conversation at work.

Golden Years (2)

Lyons says student loans are becoming a serious social issue
for which there is no quick fix.
Collins points to the fact that Americans are healthier and living longer
so people don't feel the urge to retire as soon as others did in the past.
McMillan says that many older people like working and feel adrift
when they stop.
And Lyons describes retirement at 65 as an arbitrary finish line.

Heavy burden: We talk about a lot of different burdens.
We all try to reduce our tax burden, for example.
Or tax payers will bear the burden of these new government expenditures.

Economic burden
Burden of proof

Quick fix:

Bear something in mind: Collins says, "One important thing to bear in mind
is that Americans are generally healthier and living longer."
"Keep in mind" would be okay as well.
It means "consider something, factor something in when we're
making a judgement or decision."
Imagine someone is buying a dog.
They should bear in mind how much exercise it will need.
Does that fit their lifestyle?
Or John's presentation was so so.
But keep in mind that it was his first presentation.

Life expectancy: How long people are expected to live.
Japanese men and women have some of the longest life expectancies
in the world. Right?

Life expectancy at birth

Feel the urge: Feel the desire to do something, you know,
want to do something.
You could say, "I'm feeling the urge to travel lately."
Or, "I'm feeling an urge to travel."
That would be okay too.

Retiree:

At loose ends: We say this when someone doesn't know what to do.
They don't have a clear purpose or occupation.
When I was in high school, my mother didn't want me
to be at loose ends during the summer.
So I had to get a job every year.

Have scads of free time on one's hands: If we have free time on our hands,
we have nothing to do, or at least nothing essential to do.
You could say, I have some time on my hands next week.
So I'm going to clean the house.
Or, all he does is play video games.
He has too much time on his hands.

Boredom:

Obsolete: Down at the bottom, Lyons says,
The whole concept of "retirement age" is becoming obsolete.

Arbitrarily imposed: "Arbitrarily" means "without cause or reason."
Things like, he arbitrarily cut Phil's salary.
So there wasn't a good reason.
He just decided to do it.
And if we impose something, we establish a rule or system
and we make people obey it.
And if we regulate ourselves, that's self-imposed.
Like the company has self-imposed restrictions on accepting gifts
from clients.

What with:

Longevity: Lyons means the length of someone's life.
You could say, "Regular exercise may help increase longevity."
It can also mean "a long life, living a long life."
For example, she attributes her longevity to walking every day.

Promotions based on longevity

Be faced with: Up at the top, McMillan says, "over 40 million people
in the U.S. are faced with paying off at least one student loan?"
They will have to deal with some unpleasant or difficult situation.
McMillan uses the passive.
You can also use the active form.
Like consumers are facing higher prices next year.
Or department stores are facing a tough holiday season.

Let's face it.

We have to face the facts.

Hello everybody.

Hello and welcome to the show.
This is Heather Howard.
Let's take a look at conversation at work.

Golden Years (1)

McMillan says he was surprised to learn that about 20% of Americans
aged 65 and older are employed.
He adds that nearly one third of older workers want to keep working
as long as possible while over 10% intend never to retire.
Lyons says about half of Americans haven't made financial plans
for retirement.
And McMillan says student debt is making it hard for people
to start families and save.

Golden years: autumn years  the time after one's retirement
Golden ager

Roughly: About, approximately.
We also say things like, a rough estimate or a rough guess.
The nuance is not detailed, not exact.
Like, I don't know exactly how much a plane ticket would cost.
My rough guess would be 100,000 yen.

I was handled roughly.

Roughly 10%

Baby boomer:

Reach retirement age:

Ever: At any point, at any time.
As in: I will never speak to him again, ever.
Or, have you ever been to South America?

I will never speak to him again, ever.

I will never ever speak to him again.

Close to a third:

Aging: Down towards the bottom, Lyons says, "Aging baby boomers
need money to maintain the lifestyle they're accustomed to."
Something aging is getting older.
I decided to replace my aging refrigerator, for example.
Or, I'm trying to keep my aging body healthy.

Refrigerator

Be accustomed to:

When it comes to: Regarding, or when the situation involves this.
The past tense would be "when it came to."
You could say, I'm completely ignorant when it comes to music.
That's definitely me.
When it comes to reading, I like history the best.

Pension plan: Lyons is talking about company workplace systems
that provided employees with pensions after retirement.
My father worked for the Alaska State government
and was able to retire very young.
However that pension plan no longer exists.

Has ever seen: McMillan says, "the U.S. has the largest number
of older workers it's ever seen."
In this case, "seen" means "experienced."
So things like, the store saw a 30% increase in sales last year.
Or, Japan is expected to see even more foreign tourists in the future.

Witnessed

Would not have thought: Collins says, "But I wouldn't have thought
the numbers were that high."
We often use this expression when something contradicts our expectations.
It goes against our assumptions.
Like, John applied for a transfer?
I wouldn't have thought he was interested in going overseas.
Or, I wouldn't have thought she wanted to quit.

Plain truth: Lyons says, "The plain truth is that Americans are terrible
when it comes to saving money."
This is the truth without any embellishment or qualifications.
The simple facts.
You could say, the plain truth is that Viola is not a good translator.
Or, this product is not very good. That's the plain truth.

Only get worse: At the very bottom, McMillan says,
"The article I read says things will only get worse."
Continue to get worse or continue on a down road trend.
And you can say, "only get better, only get colder."
A whole bunch of things.
Things like: Today it was very hot.
And it will only get hotter in the coming months.
Or, sales will only get worse unless we improve our products.

Things can only get better.

That's all for today.

See you next time. Bye, bye.

MP3 player

Hello everybody.

Hello and welcome to the show.
This is Heather Howard.
Let's take a look at conversation at work.

Money Matters (6)

S: Our current vignette discusses teaching children about money?
Did you ask your parents how much they make?

H: I didn't ask that. I did ask once if were middle class,
and I've always liked my mother's answer.
She said, "Class is a state of mind, not money."
We are upper class.
If you try to be a good person, and dedicate yourself to knowledge
and understanding, you are upper class."
But a while back I read about one father's idea for helping children
understand the concepts of spending and saving,
and I think I'm going to follow in his footsteps.

S: What do you do?

H: Well, his little got a weekly allowance and he set up three jars
to hold her money.
One was for spending, another was for saving and the third was for
giving to charity.
When she wanted a toy or something at the store, he would say,
"OK, when we get back home, we'll check how much you have
in your spending jar."
That helped them avoid impulse purchases,
and helped teach the little girl that money is a finite quantity.
She could use the money from her spending jar and way she liked,
but once it was gone, she didn't get any more until her next allowance
rolled around.
And if she wanted something a bit more expensive, she had to wait
until the spending jar contained that much.
This taught her about putting off immediate gratification
in order to get something more valuable later on.

S: Very sensible.
So, do you plan to give your daughter an allowance when she gets older?

H: Yes. And I plan to tie it to her doing certain chores:
Taking the trash out, washing the dishes. That sort of thing.
It's important to understand that money comes from work.
You don't get it for nothing.
Though I must admit, this vignette has made me nervous about
my approach to the ATM machine at the bank…

S: What do you mean?

H: I've actually been letting my daughter push some of the buttons
for me when I take out money.
I thought it was a fun way to help her practice numbers -
"where's the number seven, honey? Press the seven" - you know,
that sort of thing.
But maybe I should make a point of telling her,
"This is where Mommy's work money goes."

S: You've mentioned the summer jobs you've had in the past,
including working at an ice cream store and how it made you
appreciate how hard it was.

H: Absolutely. I recommend that every teenager do that kind of work
for at least a year.
Fast food and retail may seem like fun, breezy jobs.
But they're actually nothing of the kind.
Your feet may be aching. The customers may be rude.
But you have to be helpful, cheerful and polite the whole time.
And you get blamed all the time for things that are not your fault.
Ever since I worked in those fields,
I've tried not to make more work for their employees.
I went shopping with a boyfriend many years ago and after he tried
on a jacket and decided he didn't want it.
He tossed it on top of the clothing rack.
Without even thinking, I said,
"Don't do that. Hang it back up so that sales lady doesn't have to."

That's all for today.

See you next time. Bye, bye.

Business Communication in Action
Hello everybody.

Hello and welcome to the show.
This is Heather Howard.
Let's take a look at conversation at work.

Money Matters (5)

Collins lists different ways that parents can handle explaining
the increasing gap between rich and poor.
Lyons shares some of the jobs he had when he was younger
including delivering newspapers and working in fast food.
Collins says that such jobs told her the value of money
and boosted her self-confidence.
She also developed discipline and responsibility.

Inherit: Collins is talking about receiving money or property
when someone dies.
Things like: He inherited a lot of money from his grandfather.
But it can also refer to a situation being passed on.
Like, the new president has inherited a company with a lot of debt.

Priority: The thing we treat as more important than other things.
It gets more attention, it gets handled first.
For example, my priority is raising our sales.
Or, his top priority is his family.
And things have or they get priority.
Like, this report gets priority this week.
We have to finish by Friday.

Priority treatment
Get priority treatment
Priority pass

Have a paper route: Around the middle, Lyons says,
"I had a paper route, I cut the neighbors' lawns."
You can also say, "I had a paper [raut]."
Either one is fine.

Cut the neighbors' lawns: You can also say,
"mow the lawn, trim the lawn, cut or mow the grass."
Those are fine too.
When I was little, my mother would let me push the lawn mower sometimes.
Or she would let me help her cut the grass.

Mow

Flip burgers: Lyons is talking about working in a fast food restaurant.
We say flip burgers because we turn them over, we flip them over
when we cook them.
We also say flip pancakes.
I flipped some pancakes for breakfast.

Flip a coin

Same here. Me too, Collins is saying.
I feel the same way. I'm in the same situation.
Imagine someone says, "I don't like horror movies."
I reply, "Same here. I don't like being scared."
Or someone said, "I can never find my keys."
I'd answer, "Same here. I'm always digging through my purse."

Same with me.

Self-esteem:

Sense of discipline and responsibility:

Rude and unthinking:

Interest: Down at the bottom, Lyons says, "Next on my list is teaching
my kids about things like interest and the stock market."

Stock market:

Early on in school:

Consequence: The outcome, the result of an action.
And I think this is usually negative.
We don't really talk about a positive consequence.
That sounds strange.
We also say "suffer the consequences."
And that's experience the bad result.
Suffer as a result of some action.
Like many low income families suffer the consequences
of the new tax plan.

Face the consequences

Pocket money: Lyons says, "I did it to earn pocket money
when I was in high school."
A relatively small amount of money to spend as we like.
Usually it's related to young people who are not financially independent.
You know, the image of a kid putting money in their pocket.
But sometimes working adults use it too.
Like, she does freelance translating work to earn extra pocket money.

A lesson in: Down towards the bottom, Collins says,
"It's a real lesson in how to treat people."
A lesson in something: it teaches us about something
or demonstrates something.
Like, his success is a lesson in determination.
You know, he never gave up.
He overcame so many obstacles to succeed.
Or, this product is a lesson in overconfidence.
We didn’t make sure customers would like it.

That's all for today.

See you next time. Bye, bye.

Hello everybody.

Hello and welcome to the show.
This is Heather Howard.
Let's take a look at conversation at work.

Money Matters (4)

Lyons describes how his father took out his monthly salary in cash
to help teach him about the value of money.
He says his father showed how much money was spent on food
and other items: a demonstration that helped Lyons develop
a strong respect for money and how hard his father worked to get it.
McMillan says his parents kept him ignorant of such things.

Dear me.

Win the lottery: McMillan is talking about winning an actual contest.
You know, where they pick random numbers and the winners get money.
We buy lottery tickets to participate in those.
I bought a few lottery tickets in the United States.
But the most I ever won was 5 dollars.

Hit the jackpot

And this can be metaphorical too.
If you get something really really good, then you hit the jackpot.
I once heard a very famous and very very handsome actor.
They said, "He hit the genetic jackpot."

Withdraw: Up at the top, Lyons says,
"So he withdrew his whole monthly salary in cash."

Teller:

Obsessive: This is focusing on something to an abnormal degree,
doing it to an abnormal level.
Like, he's obsessive about punctuality.
If you're one minute late, he gets very upset.
Or, she's obsessive about cleanliness. [klenlines]

Get someone's attention:

Peel off: When we peel something off, we're pulling off a layer.
You could say, "I peeled all the labels off the packages."
Or, she peeled off her sweater when she got home.

Utilities:

Mortgage payment:

Envy: Down at the bottom, McMillan says, "I envy you."
He covets an advantage, a possession that someone else has.
Like, I envy Fred's translating skills.
Or, I don't envy his early start. He has to be at work 8 a.m.
And I think, in general, "envy" sounds better than "jealous."
"Envy" sounds more mature.
Like, hhm. I wish I had that.
You know, I'd like to get that.
Whereas "jealous" sounds more childish.
Like, You're just jealous that he makes more money.

Green / green with envy

Sibling:

Blissfully ignorant of:
This indicates "naive ignorance of something serious."
Like a person happily goes about their business
not realizing they should know something.
Like, she was blissfully ignorant of the tax laws and got in trouble.
Or, he was blissfully ignorant of the coming layoffs.

Tricky: Requires skill or caution to handle, to do.
I often say this is tricky to translate,
meaning it's hard to convey the meaning.
Or choosing stocks can be tricky.
It's hard to predict what the market will do.

The better part of: Up at the top, Lyons says, "It took the tellers
at his bank the better part of 24 hours to organize that many ones."
The majority, the larger part of something.
Things like: I spent the better part of an hour cleaning out my desk.
Or, he spent the better part of the day writing that report.

Etc., Etc. : In the middle, Lyons says,
"his father explained how much money went for food, utilities,
the mortgage, etc., etc."
And soon, and so forth.
For example, we made small talk:
how's your family, how's work? Etc., etc.
Or, we saw the famous spots in London:
the Tower, Buckingham Palace, etc,. Etc.

and so forth, and so on

That's all for today.

See you next time. Bye, bye.

Business Communication in Action
Hello everybody.

Hello and welcome to the show.
This is Heather Howard.
Let's take a look at conversation at work.

Money Matters (3)

McMillan says it's important for children to be able to answer
family budget questions.
And Collins recommends not treating the ATM like a toy in front of
children.
Lyons describes how he and his wife helped their children improve
their math skills and be part of a financial decision.
He also talks about the time his father brought home thousands of dollars
in cash.

Basic necessities:

As the saying goes: As expressed in this adage, this maxim.
A similar term is "as they say."
This can refer to sayings or common expressions.
Like, better safe than sorry, as they say.
Or, better late than never, as the saying goes.

Flash lots of money: In this case, "flash" means
"use or wear in a showy, conspicuous way."
There's a nuance of showing off like saying, "Hey! Look at me."
For example, he's been flashing his designer watch around the office.
Or, she's always flashing her expensive jewelry.

ATM(=automated[automatic]teller machine):
In the middle, Collins says,
"Don’t treat the ATM as though it's a game."
You can say, "ATM" or "ATM machine."
Either is okay although technically machine is already part of the name.
You could ask, "Is there an ATM nearby?"
Or, does their ATM machine take Japanese cards?

PIN Personal Identification Number
PIN number PIN code

Nijubashi Bridge

Calculate: Compute, work out mathematically.
Things like:
This website helps you calculate your tax burden.
Or, we can save 10% quota by my calculation.

calculator

Sharpen someone's math skills:

Commendable: Down towards the bottom, McMillan says,
"That's very commendable."

Enlightened:
An enlightened person or thing is forward thinking and wise.
It shows understanding and reason.
Such as: The company has an enlightened policy regarding paternity leave.
New fathers can take up to one year off.

Enlightened person

Old-school:

Dump:Here "dump" means "drop or release something in a large mass."
There's a sense of dropping something heavily like "boom."
He dumped his coat and bag on the desk.
Or, I dumped all the papers on the table.

Garbage dump

Rob a bank: We sometimes use this expression when someone
has a lot of cash on hand.
Imagine you see me with 300,000 yen in cash.
You might ask, "Did you rob a bank?"
And I say something like,
"No, no. I'm getting a new television."

Go for: Up at the top, McMillan says,
"Like how much money goes for basic necessities every month."
You could also say, "go to" in this situation.
He means used for a specific purpose channeled to that purpose.
Like, 20% of our budget goes to personnel costs.

Without saying a word: Down at the bottom, Lyons says,
"his father came home one day and without saying a word
dumped thousands of dollars on the kitchen table."
He means literally "without speaking."
We also say, "without batting an eye."
And that means someone doesn't hesitate, or get flustered.
I judged a speech contest the other day.
And someone's cellphone rang during one of the speeches.
But without batting an eye, the speaker just kept going.

That's all for today.

See you next time. Bye, bye.

Hello everybody.

Hello and welcome to the show.
This is Heather Howard.
Let's take a look at conversation at work.

Money Matters (2)

McMillan says children know money is important and want to know
more about it.
While Lyons admits that adults often don't answer their questions well.
Ueda and McMillan agree that children shouldn't be shielded
from financial realities.
And Lyons says there's a middle ground as to what to tell them.
He recommends starting with something a family regularly
spends money on.

Hold out one's hand:
McMillan is talking about literally putting out your hand, you know,
to beg on the street.
But this expression can also mean "attempt to reach someone."
Seek to compromise, in other words, or come together somehow.
Like, the new governor held out his hand to his political opponents.
He said, "Let's work together for the prefecture."

Get flustered:

Change the subject: Turn the conversation to some other topic.
Things like:
I tried to talk about the budget but he just changed the subject.
Or, she always changes the subject when he mentions marriage.

Not to change the subject

On an entirely different subject

See right through: Immediately realize the true meaning of something.
Not be fooled at all by appearances or what somebody is saying
on the surface.
People can see right through empty flattery, for example.
They know the person doing the flattery actually wants something.
Or, I could see right through his excuses.

Impertinent: Collins says,  My dad would say"None of your business,"
when I  asked what he thought were impertinent questions.
This is being rude and insolent, not showing the proper respect,
especially, for someone who's older or senior to us.
Children are told don't be impertinent, you know,
when they criticize their parents, for example.
Or, she's really impertinent toward her boss,
always questioning her directions and smirking her ideas.

Insolent

Make sense:

Student loan: Loans specifically for students to pay for school.
You know, they tend to have special interest rates, repayment schedules.
I took out a student loan every year when I was in college.

That's a common mistranslation. Right?
If you don't have to pay it back, it's a scholarship or a grant.
If you have to pay it back, it's a loan.

Pay off:Pay all of the debt.
I just paid off my mortgage, for example.
Or, my car is finally paid off.

Pay off my mortgage

It's a risk. But it will pay off in the long run.

The birds and the bees: Towards the bottom, McMillan says,
"It's like not telling children about  the birds and the bees."

Also known as "the facts of life."
McMillan is talking about sex and how babies are made.

These expressions are a little old fashioned now but we still use them
often in a slightly joking way.
Like, he is 25 now. He probably knows about the birds and the bees.

Go over: Review, examine.
Things like: We went over the presentation afterward talking about

ways to improve it.
Or, let's go over tomorrow's schedule.

Perils of impulse buying:

That's easier said than done: This is a very famous expression.
It means something will be difficult to actually achieve or put into practice.
And you can just say, "easier said than done" too.
Such as, I wish I could exercise every day. But easier said than done.

That's all for today.

See you next time. Bye, bye.

Hello everybody.

Hello and welcome to the show.
This is Heather Howard.
Let's take a look at conversation at work.

Money Matters (1)

Ueda asks if American parents tell their children how much money they make.
And Lyons says most are probably uncomfortable with the subject.
Lyons attributes this partly to parents not wanting their children to
judge others by their job and income.
Ueda cites a columnist who recommends teaching children about money
from around the age of five or six.
But Collins wonders if that would be too much for kids to deal with.

Advice column:

How much money someone makes:

Household: The social unit of people who live together in one dwelling.
And there are many different types of households.
Single person households, elderly households, single parent households.
And often the person designated on tax forms and other documents
as the leader of the family is called the head of the household.

Less than comfortable:

Family finances: How much income a family has and how much debt,
what they have to spend money on.
You could also say his finances are a mess. Lots of credit card debt.
No savings plan.

Get into the habit of:
Make something a habit, make ourselves do something regularly.
Or it becomes a habit, something we do regularly.
For example, she's gotten into the habit of doing Yoga every morning.
Or, he's gotten into the habit of skipping the breakfast.

Get out of the habit / kick the habit

Judge someone by:

Deserve to know: Around the middle, Ueda says, "the columnist argues
that children deserve to know what their parents make."
Have a right to know or be worthy of knowing.
For example, consumers deserve to know where their food was grown
or processed.
Or, employees deserve to know if a merger is being considered.

The public's right to know
the right to know
the right to free access to information.

Claim:

I'm not so sure: I'm not confident that's right.
I'm not sure I agree.
You can also say, "I'm not sure about that, or I'm not sure I agree."
Things like: He thinks consumption will go up this year.
But other experts aren't so sure.
Or, I'm not so sure about this marketing plan

Allowance:

Household chores: The tasks we perform regularly around the house:
washing the dishes, vacuuming, doing the laundry.
The singular noun "chore" often means "difficult or unpleasant tasks."
Like, doing our taxes is a chore, isn't it?
Or, I have to clean the whole house next week.
What a chore!

Chore

Innately: Present in a person since birth or an essential part of something.
He is innately shy, for example.
Or, the restaurant business is innately risky.

Openly: Up at the top, Ueda says, "the columnist's suggestion that
you should talk to your kids openly about how much money you make."
Without hiding anything, without concealment.
Like, she openly admitted she was looking for a new job.
Or, he openly expressed his doubts about the product.

Be too much for: Down at the bottom, Collins says,
"It could be too much for them."
It could overwhelm them,
it could be too much for them to handle or process.
Things like: Leading that project was too much for Jeremy.
He doesn't have enough experience.
Or that movie is too much for small children.
It's very scary.

That's all for today.

See you next time. Bye, bye.

Hello everybody.

Hello and welcome to the show.
This is Heather Howard.
Let's take a look at conversation at work.

Casual Dress Revolution (6)

S: Our current vignette starts off talking about A & A's new dress code.
Does your office have anything like that, Heather?

H: No. Not at all. We're highly diverse bunch when it comes to clothes,
especially among the women.
We range from a few people who are considered our "fashion leaders" - always
very stylishly dressed - to person to on the end of the spectrum,
like me.
My fashion philosophy these days is, "Hey, this fits!"
I pretty much wear jeans and sweaters every day.
Of course, that's in the office, just interacting with other staffers at the paper.
When I have a visitor, or go out to meet someone, I make more of an effort.

S: So what are your fashion guidelines at times like that?

H: Keep it professional and keep it simple would be my motto.
A good rule of thumb might be "would I feel comfortable wearing this
to a first meeting with a boyfriend or girlfriend's parents?"
So not too big or flashy with the accessories, for example,
and not too many of them.
When I  was a girl, my mother used to advise me,
"When in doubt, take something away."
So usually one or two focal points of an outfit are enough.
Like, nice earrings and an interesting pattern on skirt or a colorful scarf
and a bracelet.
Not stand-out earrings, big necklace, brightly colored blouse, patterned skirt.

S: Well, as mentioned in the vignette, there are different standards
for standard industries, of course.

H: Oh, certainly. A banker should always be thinking, look responsible.
Look like an island of calm in all storms at sea.
But someone in interior design or fashion would want to emphasize
creativity, individual style, so daring is probably a better look for them.
But event hen I think you can be bold or unique without being overdone.

S: What do you think about the financial companies' ultra strict rules?

H: They do sound over the top at first hearing.
But I can understand the company wanting to avoid certain faux pas.
There are a lot of people out there, for example, who could use advice
about how much perfume to put on.
I haves at on the train just dying at times because the person next to me
had on so much, my eyes were watering.
You know, My nose was running.

S: The vignette also mentions how standards have changed over the years.
It's hard to believe pants were once scandalous for women, isn't it?

H: It is.
I've mentioned the etiquette columnist that I admire in the States.
She once got a letter from a reader who was complaining about
that very thing.
He didn't like the pants suits being worn by some of his female employees.
He called them close to indecent.
Then he mentioned that some others were wearing nice skirts and blouses
and asked how he could encourage others to do the same.
Pretty sexist. Right?
His concern should be how well they do their jobs,
not whether their fashion choices meet his personal preferences.
The columnist answered, "Appoint the women in skirt to executive
positions whether they can serve as role models for the others."
She wasn't trying to get women out of pants.
She was just tongue in cheek, trying to get him to treat
his female employees like employees, not decorations in his office.

That's all for today.

See you next time. Bye, bye.

Hello everybody.

Hello and welcome to the show.
This is Heather Howard.
Let's take a look at conversation at work.

Casual Dress Revolution (5)

Collins says people like their colleague Wu often wear
athletic-like clothing but take care to make it appropriate for work.
Grace admits that casual clothing has become standard in American
business but says image consultants remind people that
looking professional is important in getting ahead.
Collins warns that inappropriate clothing can get people gossiping.
And Grace says a person has to look good to succeed.

Show disrespect to: Display a lack of respect.
Grace could also say, "That would be disrespectful to your workmates."
And "disrespect" can be a verb as well.
We tell our kids things like, don't respect the police.
Or don't disrespect your elders.

Dis 最近の若者が使う俗語 = to be rude to someone

Active wear:

Well-fitting: Well-fitted to the body, not too tight, not too loose.
We also say, tight-fitting and that means tight.
You know, very close to the body.
That's how I knew a colleague had got pregnant once.
She always wore a tight-fitting dresses but then,
suddenly started wearing loose clothes.

Posterior: One of the many fun ways to say "bottom."
We also have ah, real end, tush, tuckus. T-U-C-K-U-S.
Things like: I slipped on the ice and fell right on my tush.
Or, the bee stung me in my tuckus.

Attire:In the middle, Lyons says that common sense should be
the deciding factor in our attire.

Staple: Something used or enjoyed constantly by many people.
A standard constant part of something.
Rice is one of Japan's staple foods, for example.
A fundamental, constant component of Japanese meals.
For many Americans, beef is a staple part of our diet.

Corporate America:

Image and wardrobe consultant:
People who give advice on your overall image and what to wear.
You will see articles with headlines like, inexpensive ways
to add elegance to your wardrobe.
Oh, and in Britain, a wardrobe can mean a free-standing tall cabinet
where you put clothes and such.
We don't really use it that way in America though.

Climb the corporate ladder:

Forget: We have "forget" used ah, two ways here in quick succession.
One is ah, fail to remember, not keeping your mind.
The other is basically telling someone, "Don't do it."
Give it up. It won't help you. There's no hope.
Things like: Oh, forget trying to make a reservation during Golden Week.
You know, you won't find anything.

Flip-flops and cutoffs: "Flip-flops" are those beach and pool sandals,
you know, their name for their movement they make as you walk in them.
And "cutoffs" are called that because they're cut off
from longer jeans or pants.

Turn heads: Down at the bottom, Collins says, "clothing that turns
people's heads may also get their tongues wagging."
If we turn heads, we get attention for being attractive, unusual, showy.
It depends on a situation.
Like, he's so handsome. He turns heads every time he goes outside.
Or, he wear such bright colors. He turns heads every time he goes out.

Get tongues wagging:

Make a mark:

Criteria: In the middle, Lyons says the three main criteria are
comfort, convenience, and a professional look.
Now here, there are three elements.
But "criteria" is often used to mean a single standard or rule.
Things like, yearly income is the single criteria for this tax break.
Or, product X doesn't meet this criteria for an eco-friendly rating.
I don't encounter criterion much in spoken or written English.
I think "criteria" is a lot more common

That's all for today.

See you next time. Bye, bye.

Hello everybody.

Hello and welcome to the show.
This is Heather Howard.
Let's take a look at conversation at work.

Casual Dress Revolution (4)

Grace says companies have made a great deal of progress since the 1950s and
describes what dress codes back them required men and women to wear.
Lyons says work and home used to be more clearly divided.
And Ueda says different people have different opinions on
what's appropriate clothing.
McMillan shares a confusing expression that was used on
an invitation he received.

Talk about micromanaging:

Get bad publicity: Get a lot of negative attention from the public.
Company X got a lot of bad publicity for its sexist hiring policies.
Or, they got a lot of bad publicity over the unsanitary conditions
at the factory.
It's sometimes said that all publicity is good publicity, meaning
that even criticism is good because it means you're in the public eye,
it means people are noticing you.
Not sure that's always sure.

Have come a long way:

Conservative: In this case, "conservative" means "reserved, sober,
not flashy or provocative."
You could say, oh, she's in banking.
So she always dresses conservatively.
You know ah, dark colors, ah, no flashy jewelry.

Unfeminine and scandalous: "Unfeminine" is "not feminine," you know,
not womanly.
Lots of things used to be considered unfeminine:
women working, women having an opinion.
Be careful with this term though.
It's often discriminatory implying that women are supposed to
behave this way.
And if they don't or they're not, real women, or they're not, nice women.

"Scandalous" means "disgraceful, shameful, shocking."
The idea is something angers us or shocks us because it seems wrong.
You could say, that company was using low quality material in its products.
You know, that is scandalous, lying to the customers.

Boundary between: In the middle, Lyons says,
"the boundary between home and work was much clearer back then."
It means the dividing line.
You know the point where one thing becomes another.
This river marks the boundary between two states, for example.

Boarder 国境

Disgraceful:

Confusing: Down at the bottom, McMillan says,
"Yes, dress codes can often be confusing."

A while back:

Dressy:

Whatever that means:
We often use this about statements and slogans that don't make sense
to us or that are vague and hard to define.
Like, I want to have a fulfilled life, whatever that means.

Give something a miss:
This means a pass on something, you know, not go, not attend.
It's dismissive.
You know, like, No, um, I don't, I'm not gonna go.
So be careful how you use it.
Never use it to turn down an invitation.
Would you like to come to my birthday party?
No. Give it a miss.
HUH! You know, that would be shocking.
It's better for things like. Ah, you know I don't really like horror movies.
So I'm gonna give that one a miss.

Come down to:

Basic common sense:

Draw the line at: This is too far.
This is the point where someone says no.
Things like: Other people can give me their opinion.
But I draw the line at rudeness.
I don't want people to be rude to me.
Or, I'll do some overtime.
But I draw the line at every day.
I won't do every day.

As far as someone is concerned: Ueda says, "What one person thinks
is appropriate is unprofessional or disgraceful as far as another person
is concerned."
In that person's opinion.
And there's often a nuance here of regardless what other people think.
If I say, oh, as far as I'm concerned, this tax cut is a terrible idea.
It sounds like this is my position even if other people disagree.

That's all for today.

See you next time. Bye, bye.
